Fumes in cabin at idle.

I have a 2005 E-350 extended conversion van wth a high top and the turbo diesel engine. I'm gettinng diesel fumes in the cabin when I stop at a red light with the heater blower on. I'm wondering if this is normal. I have never owned a diesel before. I took it back to the dealer and they checked it out, found nothing and said this was normal with the wind blowing is a certain direction. They said there was a statment in the owners manual to that affect. I looked and couldn't find anything like that.
Does anyone else have a problem like this?
Also I'm getting 15.6 mpg for the 6,000 miles that I have put on so far. Someone said that should improve after 10,000 miles to about 18mpg. Any comments?
Thanks.

Re: Fumes in cabin at idle.

I would assume that absolutely any vehicle (with the windows rolled down and the wind blowing in just the perfect direction at the perfect speed would blow exhaust into the passenger compartment. I also trust the dealer so much that I would definately want them to find and show me the statement in the owners manual.

It may be the fact that I really do like the smell of diesel or I have just become accustom to it but I do not notice it at any time in my van (with a raised roof).

Before I replaced my stock exhaust and tightened up the donuts I noticed the smell a little but it did go away with the new exhaust (I did have a hole in the exhaust right by the doghouse in the stock setup).

I cannot afford a new van so I wouldn't know about the mileage part............but...........
I have heard from many people that the mileage will get better until the engine is really broken in.

Oh yeah, Welcome to The Diesel Stop!!!!!

Re: Fumes in cabin at idle.

I think you are lucky to get that. Some people get more but I'm at 13-14 mpg with no significant change in 5500 miles. I have about a 8500# empty weight and the 4x4 conversion. I camped last weekend with a 9000# conversion 7.3 PSD 2 wheel drive. He gets 17+ with only 3000 miles. Too many variables but the Ford 6.0 better mileage claims I think are a crock.

Re: Fumes in cabin at idle.

I experience the same thing when sitting at a light with the vent/ac/heat on. Turning them off or AC to MAX keeps outside air from comming in. Really wish there was a recirculate button like on other vehicles. As far as mileage, I get about 11.5 in town and a tad over 14 on hwy if I keep it under 2K rpm's, and thats with a 4x4 van weighing in over 8500# with a bit over 11K miles on it.

Re: Fumes in cabin at idle.

Arundel I have a 2005 E-350 PSD ext. I have no fumes in the cabin. I have 7300 mi. and still get 12.5 mpg. Can't wait to see that 18 mpg. I think i will change the oil to amsoil and maybe that will help.

How did you get your user name?

I lived in England for Two years (working for Ford) and the little village that we lived in was "Arundel". We loved it. I want to go back!
