Which gauges do folks recommend....

From reading various posts on the site it seems that it would be a good thing to put a tranny, pyro, boost gauge set on. What do folks recommend given that a van has a different setup then the reg. pickup. How difficult is installation? Thanks for the info. jeff

Re: Which gauges do folks recommend....

I'm thinking the easiest thing is to go to dieselsite.com and check out Bob Riley's a-pillar kit with Autometer gauges, complete and ready to install. Also, apparently the steering column pod for trucks will also work for us with minimal adjustment -- I'm also considering that for a tach. I would have Bob set me up with one of those too just to make it easier, though I'm not sure it's listed on his site.

Re: Which gauges do folks recommend....

The van and truck A pillars are different. To use the A pillar guage pod in your '05 you'll have to give up the grab handle since the A-pillar guage pods currently available for the van don't account for it.I dont know if Bob Rileys site carries the van A-pillar guage pod but Dennis at ITP does along with other van specific accessories. Both are site sponsors.

Re: Which gauges do folks recommend....

I receintly installed the Bully Dog Outlook monitor on my 2000 E350 PSD and am quite pleased with it. It is aprox. 1.5" by 2.5" backlit LCD screen and reads boost, high boost, and 2 pyros. I only installed 1 pyro (preturbo) and taped the trans pan with a probe and used the pyro 2 on the guage as trans temp. The only strange thing (I guess) is the boost will read 2.5 to 3.0 pounds with just the key on and the engine off! Start the engine and let it idle and the boost will stay in the low 3 range until you start moving or rev. it up. Have seen as high as 17. lbs. of boost. Also, the two pyros begin their readings at 73 degrees. The boost readings with eng. off really interests me though. Anyone shead some light on this?

You might want to give Dennis at ITP a call... he has van specific options and carries a full line of Autometer gauges.....I'm using the Phantom series in my van.

I've been a little cautious about recommending anything since I'm not familiar with the 6.0L Van and thus can't recommend anything with any real credibility as is the case IMO with most of the Vanners here. I will get my first on hands look at a 6.0L Van tomorrow if things work out right and might just see how the dual pods that I have would fit the 6.0L Van which might give you 6.0L Vanners a potential option. I may try and have someone with a digital camera give the 6.0L Van that I think will show up at the NOVAPS meeting tomorrow take some pics that I can use in answering some questions I see you guys asking. In fact, I think Darth_Surplus is about the only 6.0L Vanner that has done ... or is in the process of doing a gauge install in a Van and is about the only one that can provide any real meaningful first hand information. In fact I was just looking to see if I could find his first name to use in this post and see he just posted some of his gauge install adventures with his tranny gauge sendor. As you can see from his thread, he has had a couple of adventures and you will probably too, but don't be too afraid and deal with a good TDS Sponsor and you should be O.K.

For the price the ISSPROs are IMO a good choice and I'm not sure if anyone makes an A-Pillar setupo for the 6.0L Van if it's different than the 7.3L Vans. When I did mine nothing was available specifically for a Van and I used the dual pod for the F-series and I think they worked out well for my use. You can see the pics in THIS ALBUM. Most likely you're going to have to be a little creative in whatever gauge install you end up doing, but get used to that since not much is available for us Vanners and that is especially true for you new 6.0L Vanners.

Good Luck,

Do his pillars come with everything already installed/pre-wired? That's what I'm considering, just to make it easier. What the h*ll am I saying? I don't have the time anyway!

Re: Which gauges do folks recommend....

I'm sure he could get a pillar sent out with guages installed in it --- if you're willing to drive out to Phoenix, I'm sure he'd make time to install them for you also.

Re: Which gauges do folks recommend....

Let's see - vacation to Phoenix, with a stop-off in Vegas... Get my gauges, and maybe some other mods while I'm there, another stop-off in Vegas on the way back. Hmmm... Could be an expensive advent... er, investment!
