E-Series VansTechnical discussion of topics related to vans powered by any of the Navistar engines. This covers a broad number of years, but there isn't enough demand to split it any further.
I am one happy camper! I took a leisurely drive of 84.7 miles today, highway speed 60 and sometimes 65, outside temp~100*, cruise control set. Went through the middle of two towns, San Marcos and Lockhart, TX; both are crowded little towns. Short stop at Lockhart State Park for a snack and a beer, and then back home. I filled up at a location near my home on the way out and filled up at the exact spot coming back in. It took 4.787 gallons which gave me 17.7 miles per gallon!!! I usually get 13 mpg, and as a matter of fact, when I filled it up on the way out, it figured to 13.2 mpg; that's a 36% increase. This was just one short trip, so I don't know how the long trips will work out, but think they will be similar. I was hoping for 2 ~ 3 mpg improvement but this is great. I suppose the larger exhaust, straight through muffler, and removal of the _____________cvtr, made a lot of difference.
Also, I discovered that the drone I was hearing at low speed/gears was not a drone but the sound of the muffler, LOL. I'm familiar with loud mufflers on gassers, but not diesels; this sound is entirely different. It really sounds good, after getting used to it.
Anyway, thought I'd post this for the benefit of those that have been contemplating upgrades for better fuel economy.
Glad to read you had good result with the exhaust install.
Next you may try some sort of "ADJUSTMENT" to the pmc.
I went with the SuperChip unit, with High Proformance setting.
So far I like the results, I'm in the 21+mpg range on the highway.
I shall be hitting the road for a 3K trip the end of the month, This will be the acid test.
I'll share and post the result about the 15th of Sept...So stay tuned.

Good morning, again. I have a question for you about a chip. The first chip I ordered and received in Dec., 2001 was a performance chip; not sure what the actual calibration was. When I installed it, it gave lots of power, both low end and high. However, there was one problem with it; at low speeds in parking lots or traffic, the engine would surge and jerk. It would do the same thing at highway speeds, coasting downhill. I only had the chip for a few days and wanted an exchange, but had trouble with vendor so I ordered a SuperChip for towing from a company in Dallas. It's the one I currently have in the van. I still have the performance chip, and I'm not sure if the new exhaust will make a difference, but I'm going to try it today or tomorrow. Any thoughts on the original chip? I got it from Performance Unlimited in Lubbock, TX.
Clev:
No real advise on the Chip, Try to sell it or trade would be my guess.
I like the programer as it gives me some options, Plus if I ever have to go back to a dealer I can bring it back to stock.
Which brings up another issue:
NOT ALL FORD DEALERS will work on or honor the warranty on Van/Truck that have Chip or Programers installed.
My local FORD dealer sell the BANKS system and will work on such Vech.
But there are two other's in Tuson that will not.
Just keep that in mind.
Good Luck

Just got back from a 300 mile round trip pulling my 10k TT and got 9.9 mpg for the trip; pretty good considering I usually get ~ 7.
Nash, my warranty expired a loooooonnnnngggggg time ago, so warranty is not a factor. I was going to try the performance chip on the return leg of the trip but forgot. When I bought my S/chip in Dec 2001, to my limited knowledge, programmers were not available for the van. And , now that I have a good working chip, I can't see the expense of investing in one. My next expense will be an air intake mod of some kind, and then gauges. Thanks for all your advice and recommendations.
Hi kali/steve. My exhaust installation has been a topic of discussion with about 4 different threads over the past 3 weeks. They're still listed on the first page of this forum within the first 10 threads. Have you not read any of them? Take another look and if you have further questions, I'd be glad to answer them.
