Got F series mirrors installed, power, defrost, clearnace, and turn signal
It was quite a freakin job. Took about 12 hours, with no breaks. I took pictures along the way so will be trying to put together a how to type thing. I basically will only cover one mirror, but you just do the same thing for the 3 others.
I had to completely take apart each mirror and switch out the bases. The F series bases dont fit on the van, so yeah. Figuring out how they come apart was a chore, and i believe the hardest part overall was trying to get the wires for the new mirrors down the metal arm. You have about 10 wires and have to get them through a hole about the size of a small acorn, and then it's a 10 inch long metal arm or something you have to snake through...
Anyways, just thought i'd let you guys know it is possible. Tomorrow i'm hooking up the turn signal, clearance, and heat. The power mirror for tilt and such worked with the existing van wiring, same color wires and all. And will have at least final pictures of it all on the van.
Seein i'll be doing that tomorrow for a while i guess it's more than a 12 hour job, probably more like.. 16 hours. And if you don't already have super duty mirrors installed, crike, it's a good 24 hour job,

Very Cool. The heated mirror feature is one of the things I miss from my Chevy Van.

ERIC
Your as bad as me. Wanting things that are not availible on E but are on F. I have the clearance lights and are cool. Keep up with the one off mods. We still seem to be the only two that have installed the F-cluster tach mod. Get some picts up.
I will put up some daylight photos of it all when i get some time in the coming days, but of course the night shots is what it's all about
If you notice too i painted my badges finally. They look better i think.
Anyways, yeah, i really like this mode, it was quite the job but it's worth it to me. Turned out really well, now if only ford would offer this

That is very cool! Making your vehicle unique is the best reward for the time and effort.

Re: Got F series mirrors installed, power, defrost, clearnace, and turn signal
r u talking about extending existing trailer tow mirrors outward...i would like to do this myself but do not know where i can get extensions...i know they exist because i have seen them
Re: Got F series mirrors installed, power, defrost, clearnace, and turn signal
Yeah, i've seen those extension things. I have no clue how they work and how they're installed. From what i've just experienced by installing these mirrors it can't be easy. You'd need at the very least to take it apart almost completely, then you either have to take the metal arms off the mirror side or the base side, and on the base side there are like welded on retainer kinda things...
Re: Got F series mirrors installed, power, defrost, clearnace, and turn signal
I would love to have some of those on my 84 e-350 motorhome. I wonder if they would fit or if I could make them fit. The mirrors on my motorhome stink. Any sugjestions??? Does anyone have an exaust brake on there e-350 with a 6.9L and C-6? Wondering if it would help with the stoping.
Re: Got F series mirrors installed, power, defrost, clearnace, and turn signal
Hm.. from what i've seen they wouldn't fit to well on anything older than a 92 E series. I mean.. you could get them on there but it'd take alot of tinkering I'd imagine. The area that the mirrors bolt to on newer vans just doesn't really exist there on older vans.
And, no i don't know about exhaust breaks, from what i've heard though, they're not very good on the 6.9L with the C6.
If you were really looking to spend some money you could get one of those electromagnetic brakes, Don't remember who makes them but i know the company name starts with a T.
Re: Got F series mirrors installed, power, defrost, clearnace, and turn signal
Hey my 1995 van mirrors have been back into garage doors (previous owner) and are busted up. How much did the conversion cost you if you don't mind my asking?
Re: Got F series mirrors installed, power, defrost, clearnace, and turn signal
MADVAN, Do you have information on your F-series instrument cluster installation on the site somewhere? Sounds like a great idea. Hope I'm posting this properly. Brand new to this stuff... Thanks! Stu

Hey, um.. hmm.. Well first off I had to buy the Van super duty mirrors, which i did a while back. I believe i paid around 200 for those, then for these new F series super duty mirrors i Paid 250 from a guy that found me actually. I just posted up a wanted ad on thedieselstop and he emailed me.
So if you want to do this from scratch you're looking at about 500 bucks because you need the E series and F series super duty mirrors.
