E-Series VansTechnical discussion of topics related to vans powered by any of the Navistar engines. This covers a broad number of years, but there isn't enough demand to split it any further.
Ok, E owners. How long did it take you to change out all the injector o-rings the first time you did it? Still doing mine, seems like eternity. Still not done with 9 hours into it so far. Plus hours and hours of reading posts.
Took me probably about 5 to 6 hours maybe. The first couple were really easy, the ones farthest away were pretty tuff. For the ones in the back i took a razor blade and cut through the rings and just pushed them off instead of trying to rip my arm outta socket trying to get the old rings off and new ones on, only had to rip my arm off trying to put on the new ones instead. A little diesel fuel or oil on the rings also helps them slide on a little easier.
When we had them done by a dealer they were back leaking within a month, i just thought it was a standard thing to leak i guess. When i did them myself they have not leaked since. Perhaps the dealer didn't pay much attention to detail. But anyways, good luck, an assistant might speed things up too, bring you tools, hold lights, screw things in while you hold them. One thing i remember being kinda difficult was screwing the injector line back onto the injector, the cap kept cross threading, that took a while to shimmy on right finally.
The first time it took me all day because i was trying to do them in the van one at a time.
I found that the best and quickest way is to take one side at a time.
Disconnect the drain line at the back and front on on each side.
Disconnect the injector lines and gentely lift the injector lines just eneough the lift out all the caps and lines as a assembly on each side.
Use the old set to make a new one on a worktable and it is easy. You do not have to fight with those little clamps.
I use one of those little ice pick with a hook. You can even use a large sewing neddle. Go under the O rings and take them out all at once and replace then. Besure to lube the new ones.
Then set the caps and line assembly back in there as a unit connect the lines at the front and back and the injector lines and you will be finished in half the time.
