Idle drops to real rough shake when dead cold.

First Id like to say thanks for all the help ive gotton from this site,(even though ive been lurking)
Now my question. When I start my 96'Super Van for the fist time of the day. (I really only use it on weekends for play)I noticed that when i start it and put it into reverse (cause i have to back out) for like maybe 3 seconds it grumbles and the whole van shakes! Im not really sure if its the trans (converter?) or just engine taking a second recover from the load of a cold trans.
I remeber reading about how bad the factory converters are (and the trans for that matter)my van has 62k on it.

Hi
Next time you start it in the a.m. drop it first into Low (first gear). Did it die there too? Front pump is shot in trans, it has allowed shavings and cross leakage to get into system and into t.c. engagement line, causing stall.
Have it scanned, do you get a code (P1728) for slippage or t.c. engagement? If so it's trans time.

Re: Idle drops to real rough shake when dead cold.

windsurt,

If your glow plug relay switch is not working It just may be super cold in that you have not started it for a week. Give it a minute to warm up and see if it still does the same rough start. If so it could be the E40D. They are a real problem. If you have to get it rebuilt, make sure they upgrade it, and install a after market strong TC.

I would also recommend installing an AutoTrans Interceptor. This allows you to adjust the line pressure and delay the TC lock up time. It really works well and makes the E40D work like it should. This product should lengthen the life of the E40D.

Re: Idle drops to real rough shake when dead cold.

Hey Rick I think you may have hit it with the glow plug relay. I just changed it less than 2 months ago but i noticed that it is not working again. I'll take it off tomorow and bench test it. I actully hope that it is bad (defective) because then I can change it and be done with it!
I'll let all know with in th week.
