Install U.S. Gear Underdrive

I installed the underdrive with no problem but the Speed Sensor is causing a problem. I'll be callilng the company this morning but really don't expect a solution as they are basically out of business. I'm hoping someone here has installed one of these and can help. I already had the trannie but had to order the adaptor and was told that I must use a Speed Sensor and wire it into the PCM, spliced into the Grey wire. This has caused 3 problems, all with the u/drive disengaged:
1. When pulling out normally from a dead stop, it will shift through all gears and be in 4th by 35 mph with no power. This requires flooring the accelerator to kick it back to 2d or 3d gear.
2. With the cruise set at highway speeds, there are occassional engine surges, and sometimes 'jerks'.
3. In an 80 mile distance, the jerk is so hard that it disengaged the cruise 3 times.

I know these problems are associated with the SpeedSensor, but am not sure how I can correct it. Can anyone offer a possible solution?

For all practical purposes, U.S. Gear Underdrive is out of business. They still accept phone calls, have limited parts, and Jim is fairly knowledgeable about the operation. I think the Speed Sensor is faulty and they are sending me a new one tomorrow; hopefully that will solve the problem. Other than that the u/drive works great; it changes my 3.55's to 4.66's. I'm looking forward to climbing high mountains in Colorado and Wyoming this summer.

Sounds interesting. Didn't know there was such a thing. Please give us a trip report when possible.

This is a U.S. Gear 'Under'drive auxillary transmission. The tail housing of the OEM transmission is removed and the adaptor housing for the UD is attached in it's place. Then the Aux UD is bolted to the adaptor. The drive shaft has to be shortened (I had one specially made for my C6), and heavy duty spicer u-joints are used. Wiring goes into the engine compartment along with a control module and a switch is wired/mounted to the gear shift. There are only two settings, on and off. With off, the aux UD is disengaged and the trannie is running normally; when engaged, the gearing changes the gear ratio on my 3.55's to 4.44 ~ .66. This assists in pulling out with heavy loads and climbing mountains. I bought it in 1994 for $1600 from Camping World for my E-150 351, C6 and used it until I got the SD van in '98. Then I took it out of the gasser and put it on a shelf in my garage. I recently decided to install it in my SD and had to buy a new adaptor plus a Speed Sensor; Adaptor - $400 and Speed Sensor - $200. The aux UD now sells new for $2600, and professional installation is well over $500. The same unit fits multiple applications, just a different adaptor. As stated, I used it for 4 years before putting it away, and was really satisfied with it. I'm looking forward to this years trip to /Colorado/Wyoming.
