E-Series VansTechnical discussion of topics related to vans powered by any of the Navistar engines. This covers a broad number of years, but there isn't enough demand to split it any further.
I have a 2002 E350, V10 automatic. During the first 8000-9000 miles this did not happen. When coasting up to a stop from forth gear (Overdrive) when the van downshifts into third (D) the engine brakes the van quite a bit. Did something change inside the trans. From 50 - 40 miles an hour the van slows down on a coast very heavily. (Heavy engine braking). WHen I coast behind a car on the highway I actually have to get back on the gas quite a bit. This never happened during the first 9000 miles. Its a nice feature when towing but not much fun on the highway empty....
could you have overdrive locked out? My '99 downshifts and slows with much greater authority when overdrive is off (when the button is pushed in)

No I don't have the OD button pressed. But it feels just like you pushed the button when I coast from overdrive into drive. What bothers me is that it didn't do it new. I did have the mass air and air cleaner assembly changed but I don't think any throttle parts were touched like the TV cable if my van even has one????
I suppose it's possible, but if they were hanging up that bad they would heat up really good, and when he went to brake he would probably notice his brakes were hardly funtional, either that or it wouldn't brake straight.
It must have something to do with the torque converter, i think. Maybe it has decided to lock up longer or something happend to it thinking that it should be locked up, bad sensor or something?
That'd be pretty interesting, never heard of it before but, who knows. Try disconnecting your battery for about 5 mins and rehooking it, or.. both batteries i guess. My neighbor has a van also and he said that when he disconnected some connector and reconnected he had to kill all power to the systems before it started running right again. I'm not sure if anything like this happend on yours, or if it started doing this after you worked on something, but give it try, see what happens.
