Loss Of Power Towing

I Have An 05 E350 I Tow About 11000 Pounds With It. I Have About 50,000 Miles On It Half Or More Towing. On My Last Trip It Lost Power It Was All Up Hill. At The Top Of The Last Cople Grades It Dropped Down To About 40 A Little Slower Than Usaul But Aceptable The Problem Was When I Flatined Out It Had No Power Couldn't Get It Over 45 On Flat Ground. Then The Last Grade At The Top It Missed A Shift. And Had No Power. I Pulled Over And Sat For About A Half Hour. A Couple More Small Grades Left And It Still Didn't Pull Well. Once I Got Through The Grades It Took A While To Get Back Up To Speed. The Rest Of The Trip No Problems. I Know I Need Gaudges But Not In The Budget Yet. Is There A Limp Mode If The Tranny Gets To Hot? The Check Engine Light Never Came On. I Have A 1000 Mile Trip Next Month And A Little Nervice About It. Van Is Stock Except Modified Air Box And Body Lift.

Fuel filter and air filter check, did the van make any noises? Air Sucking or anything?

Check the Turbo Bolts, make sure they are not loose.

Towing the tranny will get extra hot. Change your tranny fluid, and install the Sonnax valve & Tricumulator springs while your at it. It helps with shifting.

I installed a Mag-Hytec Tranny Pan and it adds 2 extra gallons of fluid to your system.
I have Amsoil Synthetic Fluid, you can use mobil 1 Synthetic Fluid if you want to switch to synthetics.

You need to get rid of the stock muffler, you can go cheap and install a Walker Big truck muffler and it will open up the system for you. Or install a complete new exhaust. The Pyro & Tranny Guage are the important ones to get, Boost is cool but not as importnt as the other 2.

And last is a Tuner for your engne, I have the Superchips and run it on the 60 HP Tow setting for driving around (Not Towing). Jody at DP Tuners has a great tow Program for the van that will keep the temps down and give you power. Guages are important but if you don't drive crazy you can get away with it for a trip or 2. Just be careful going uphills, don't push it hard.

For me the important things in order are,

1. new muffler (Straight-through type)

2. DP Tuner or Superchips 1705

3. Guages

4. Deep Tranny pan w/ Sonnax & Synthetics

5. extra tranny cooler inline with the original, have two.

And do you have the 3.55 or the 4.10 rear end?

the air filter was fresh i'll need to do the fuel filter. it did not make any noise. i will check the turbo bolts out. i'm planning on putting amsoil in all the way around, and a cat back on it befor the trip. i've heard about the Walker Big truck muffler i might look into that. the tranny pan sounds great i'll have to look into that. i'd like to run a tuner but still have 50k of warrenty left so i'm afraid to do much to it.

thanks shawn

Yes. At 250 degrees the tranny settles into second gear and won't budge. You might consider checking the cooler for blockage, and give the fluid the sniff test. Mercon has a slightly wierd smell, but you should know if it's burnt.

If it is, replace the filter and change the fluid.

That is stage 1. But you can use 1st if you shift manually.

If the temperature continues to climb, engine power will then be reduced to about 50%. At least on the V10s.

That happened to me only once. 24,000 combined up a 12% grade. I got stuck behind a bus, and the slower speed really made the trans heat up (almost no airflow at 20 mph). I also did not think to remove my grill insert before starting the climb, and that insert blocked about 50% of the air.

...
what sould i do in the rear end?
A larger cooler will do much more for the heat problem than a larger pan, and probably cost less. A larger pan will make it take a little longer for the fluid to heat up, but it won't really dissipate heat any better. As long as you use the right replacement cooler, you won't affect the warranty (NOTE: using a finned tube cooler will void the transmission warranty... Ford says not to use those).

For rear axle gear oil... Don't bother... It's good for life for normal use or 150,000 under extreme use.

You are really pushing the limits for the rear end that you have in the van.
I would bet that you have gotten the turbo hotter than hell and ditto for the transmission.

However, your transmission cooler mode should have kicked in with the fan coming on full blast when the tranny temp got high enough to kick it in. You would have known it for sure.......sounds like a jet engine revving up in your engine compartment.

Don't forget to do the smell test that was described earlier before you change transmission fluid. If your transmission fluid smells like it has been burned you might ask one of the transmission guru's around here, like Mark, if they have any recommendations.

If you are going to pull that much weight, you really do need a tranny temp gauge and an exhaust gas temp gauge. Rmember, our vans don't have intercoolers to help cool the turbo.

Open up your exhaust and your air intake and add an aftermarket tranny cooler once you've decided that your tranny is still OK.

it doesn't matter which oil you use as long as it meets specs. I use Rotella in the crankcase and Pennzoil (as I recall) in the tranny.

If you keep pulling that 11K trailer, change your rear end oil at 80K or thereabouts.......read about it on this web site.

Yardbrew ,

thanks for all your wisdom and tips.

I have Amsoil Synthetic in the tranny and the rear end.

I also installed the Mag-Hytec Tranny & rear end covers on my van.

The stock rear end cover and rear end hold just under 3 quarts.
With the Mag-HyTec Rear End Cover it's 6 Quarts, 3 extra Quarts.
it's well worth it for me to install this for my van.

the rear end cover also has a sending unit port so you can install a guage for your rear end.

if your towing that much weight, it may be worth the investment.

here is a nice site to see what pan/cover is for your rig,
Mag-Hytec differential covers and transmission pans

Transmission Amsoil Synthetic fluid, Holds
Holds 7.6 quarts more fluid than stock pan.
The Transmission has a Sonnax Valve installed.

11,000 is a huge amount to be towing with a stock van.

Take your time and do a good job working on your van.

Coolers and filters are key.

the first time i towed with it and the fan came on i thought i blow somthing up my friend that was folowing me with his powerstroke started laughfing at me when i pulled over
