MIL fix with high power chips?

What are you guys with high power (80hp and up) chip programs doing about the check engine light coming on from overboost? I've seen three "fixes" for it so far. One is a wire that grounds something on the MAP sensor, one is some diode trick that I've heard some not so good things about, and the last is a mechanical regulator to alter the boost to the MAP. All of these were for wastegated F series though, so I'm curious what my fellow van guys are doing about it. I've got a 4 program WD chip now, and it's setting the MIL at WOT. Thanks!

Re: MIL fix with high power chips?

Sal,I'am using the turbo boost relief valve that came with my PS2000 propane injection kit.
I very rarely set off the ses light with it installed.
Bob Riley sells these valves and can bee seen here:

It works great!

SAL

I use an adjustable blow off valve set at 24lbs. Got it out of a grainger cat. approx eight dollars. Every once and a while the light will come on.

Re: MIL fix with high power chips?

im looking for receipt were i bought mine save yourself the headache
dont use the 24 psi mapsensor blowoff get the adjustable one i went through 2 of the set ones they dont work half the time light comes on and computer starts defueling, computer takes along time of driving for it to regroup after light goes off. i purchased the adjustable one and works great you basicly turn the nob and let just enough boosted air go in map sensor so light dosnt come on it takes all of 3 times to get it right also you can let a min air go in and shifting and boost level changes

These may prevent the SES/defuel problem, but you're still overboosting the engine and exceeding what the turbo charger is designed for from my understanding. Also, I would think if you're dumping boost to the MAP sensor you now have a useless boost gauge to determine actual boost to the engine if it is tied into the Map sensor line after the dump valve. Just something to think about

Re: MIL fix with high power chips?

Larry, your right about exceeding the limits of the stock turbo by overboosting.
However,my boost gauge is accurate with the PS2000 boost relief valve installed. The valve will allow my boost gauge to read properly,it only fools the map sensor into seeing less boost to prevent the dreaded ses light and defueling to ocurr.
Brian at BTS stated that he has seen "many" trucks producing over 30lbs of boost "daily" and the stock turbo was holding together with zero problems with many trucks over 150,000 miles of abuse. However,I'am sure the life expectency will be diminished over the following years with overboosting situations (you play you pay!)
I see about 35lbs of boost almost every day when playing around and my turbo was in excellent condition when it was inspected while installing the Wicked Wheel. This was at around 82,000 miles or so.
Just don't exceed the 40lb limit as this is when the head gaskets will blow.
You could also install the H2E or new ATS ball bearing turbo if you want an invincible turbo. I'll stick with my stock van turbo and Wicked Wheel. Treat you turbo with respect as it relates to proper cool down time, etc. and it should last a long life.
I'am not worrying about my overboosting situation.

Can't wait for this years rally! See you there!

Re: MIL fix with high power chips?

Thanks for the replies guys. I think the mechanical regulator idea is what I'm going to do, BUT, here is another questions based off that..

If you put a mechanical bleed on the MAP line, that cuts the boost to the MAP, which stops the PCM from seeing too much boost and setting the MIL, but doesn't that also stop the PCM from adding the proper fuel? At the point you limit the boost reading too, the PCM will no longer see the increase in pressure, so it will stop adding fuel at that point, but you are continuing to add air. It's like a MAF on a gas motor. It reads from 0-5 volts, and if you peg the MAF at 5 volts, the PCM can't read anymore air coming in. I really don't know if this is an issue on the PSDs, as my chip tuning skills are for gas motors, but I had to ask .

Re: MIL fix with high power chips?

I installed the regulator on the MAP line today. I didn't even have to buy one, because I realized I had one on my Eastwood powdercoating gun that I don't use anymore. I set it at 24psi. Is that the proper "blow off" setting that everyone agrees on? Does anyone know what the actual boost limit is that makes the PCM set an overboost code?

Re: MIL fix with high power chips?

Sal,the dreaded ses light will turn on at 25 lbs of boost so your correct in setting the regulator to 24 lbs.
Have fun.
