E-Series VansTechnical discussion of topics related to vans powered by any of the Navistar engines. This covers a broad number of years, but there isn't enough demand to split it any further.
Trying to accelerate onto the highway, the 2001 with 220,000 on it had a little trouble. 8 ppl in the van, a 3000 lb trailer in tow, she drives fine on the highway, but climbing up hills and getting going from slow speeds it does what I think is a misfire and the check engine light comes on, however it doesn't reappear when I shut the van off and restart. I bought a $60 reader but it doesnt show a code.
The van was fine for two days when I was being very careful to be light on the throttle, thinking it might be a transmission problem.
It showed the same problem again today when I was coasting down a hill, gave it gas, it studdered and sounded like it missed and ses light came on.
NO CODE THOUGH STILL!?! I changed the fuel filter yesterday. Tranny fluid smells fine and is full.
CPS was not changed on this van b/c when I took it to ford a year ago to have it replaced, they said the vin # didn't require a recall. Could it be the valve cover harness? possibly an injector?
any thoughts would be great. Thanks guys.
Andy

I think you need a better code reader than the one you have. I also think it is a UVC connector which is either shorting out or not making good contact. Get it scanned with a good scanner and see what is there.

Ill check that out. Also, yesterday I tried to replicate the problem so I could read the code. I dropped the trailer and the passengers and drove it pretty hard.... Getting on the highway and accelerating hard from stop. It drove fine. And no code. Had the misfre/studder today towing a full load

Your scanner is definitely not retrieving the codes. If the SES lights, that means a code is stored in the pcm. With your fleet, I would definitely suggest to invest in Autoenginuty. You will need to add the ford bundle.
Got the codes:
p0344: CPS Going to get that replaced now.
p0381: Glow plug/heater indicator circuit malfunction
p0470 exhaust pressure sensor circuit malfunction
P0 470 is the one that concerns mean.... any thoughts on that one?

Maybe check to see if the tube that goes from the exhaust pressure sensor to the pass side manifold is clogged or broken. It is common for them to become clogged with soot. Maybe this is causing the ebpv to close and that would definitely cause a huge loss of power.
