My Conversionvan is Titled at DMV as a StationWagon
My Conversionvan is Titled at DMV as a StationWagon,
I had a connection at the DMV and they Titled my van as a StationWagon so I can park it at any Condo/Home Association without any problems.
One such place called me on the issue and when the cop called in the van VIN it came back as a Stationwagon not a commercial vehicle. So they had to allow me to park there.
As long as there is seating in the rear of the van and windows all the way around, it may be classified as a StationWagen.
I wrote this for all who may have this problem.

Re: My Conversionvan is Titled at DMV as a StationWagon
Here, the problem is usually the opposite But at least its not too much fuss to have it changed.
As a station-wagon there are tighter rules on emissions, bumper heights, etc. But as a commercial vehicle (van, pickup, etc) the rules can be favourable in the 10-12k# window so long as you aren't using it for business.
OTOH, towing with a 'station wagon' is a cost saver. They don't have a licensed GVW that needs to be increased to include the trailer's weight.

Al, are you in Ca? I really want to change my classificaiton before next years registration renewal in order to save some $. I have a EB cargo van that has a window in the sliding door and I am adding a window to the driver side right behind the driver. I also have two bench seats that are in the back as well. Any tips on what to tell the DMV twerp in order to get mine changed?

JW,
IM not in CA, IM in FL. now.
Tell the guy the van is a convesionvan, windows all around, and seats in the rear, and you want to register it as a stationwagon because of condo laws.
Most will do it.

JW, I'm in CA and my 4wd SMB is registered as an automobile, not a commercial vehicle. And, since it is a diesel it is exempt from smog checks.
My van probably gets non-commercial registration from the fact that it is an RV conversion van, not a station wagon. Our van started life as an RV van from Ford, not a commercial van or a wagon. You can talk to DMV, but you may be stuck with the VIN identifying it as a commercial (cargo) van. However, a few years back the DMV offered to let me register my pickup as a non-commercial vehicle if I had a permantly installed camper or shell covering the bed.
It only costs a little time to ask the DMV. If you get the answer you want, get it in writing, get the proper forms started and find out exactly what else you need to do to complete the process.
Good luck,
Mike

Last night I was behind a Lexus SUV with farm truck plates.
The BMV has 0 fans in any state.
And to think that people might actually want this same type of government bureaucracy at the hospital and doctor's office . . .
