E-Series VansTechnical discussion of topics related to vans powered by any of the Navistar engines. This covers a broad number of years, but there isn't enough demand to split it any further.
Why do my 95 PSDs sound louder than my 97?
At or near idle... not cruise.
It seems like the newer the PSD, the quieter from year to year.
What did they do to make the difference?
I love the sound of the 95s, they just sound the part. Later ones, including my 97 sound wimpy.
Thanks
Dave

I wish that were true! My '04 6.0 PSD is pretty darn loud. When we were in Alaska we were talking to a guy in an '02 7.3 PSD. We couldn't even hear his engine until I turned mine off.

Could the sound level difference between those 7.3 years have anything to do with the injectors? Did they switch vendors? I know they did between the 7.3 and the 6.0. When did they introduce split shots? Your '95 should have single shot injectors.

I have read (but not confirmed) that all 97 vans used california split shot injectors. I know that my 97 van is a lot quieter than my 96 pickup (was even before I straight piped the pickup) I haven't gotten around to checking yet to see if it does use split shot injectors.
I suppose it could be injectors...
The 95s just seem to rattle really 'hard'...
They have full exhaust.
The 97 has straight pipe back to a 3.5" DynoMax bullet...
It has a really deep exhaust note, but the clatter is no louder.
We put a 95 engine in one of our 97s once. Ford refused to work on it because the 97 computer could not "talk" to the 95 injectors. So there must have been a change. The van ran fine, just Ford refused to do any service work (it was well out of warranty).
