Noise from engine?

Hello,

Stock engine & exhaust 6.0l new this year. It has a noise I am trying to determine if it is normal or not.

At about 1500rpm there is a resonant howl from the engine compartment that vibrates the floor and is rather obnoxious. It is more pronounced when the engine is warm. The noise goes away more than 200rpm off of 1500 in either direction, and is not tied to road-speed at all. The noise is similar in character to driving along a rumble strip, or on very knobby tires.

I did not notice it at first, but I really started noticing it about 5000 miles, and I had a chance to ride in another similar vintage & mileage 6.0L van and did not notice the noise at all (he noticed it in mine right away, and asked what it was).

Power seems good, and no other complaints, but the noise, noise, noise, noise is really getting on my nerves.

Any ideas if this is expected, some issue I should seek out dealer help on, or something I can diagnose/resolve myself?

Thanks much,
-Erik

Re: Noise from engine?

Just some thoughts.......
If you are driving this vehicle and it is making this noise it sounds like you got a bad ring gear and pinion in the rear end?
Or a bad or bent drive shaft?
Or a bad hanger bearing ( if you have one )?
Or a bad U-joint?
If you are not driving or driving the vehicle it could be.....
A stopped up converter?
Or a bad turbo ( if you have one )?
Or something loose like a rear heater hose or A/C hose?
Hope this helps
Dwight

Re: Noise from engine?

Thanks for the thoughts. It is definately engine RPM related, ruling out drive-train issues. The noise exists even in park at the right RPM.

The turbo seems to perform fine, though I suppose it could be resonating with something. No performance problems what-so-ever, just irritating noise at that RPM band.

From the searches I have been doing its symptoms seem pretty much identical to the drone/moan issues that there are Ford TSBs for the trucks.
