E-Series VansTechnical discussion of topics related to vans powered by any of the Navistar engines. This covers a broad number of years, but there isn't enough demand to split it any further.
while checking things out this morning I noticed the coolant reservoir was full of oil?? The van's been running ok but this concerns me. It's a 2002 E-350 with a 7.3 PS. I checked the oil stick and it shows the oil is very low but didn't see any signs of coolant on the stick.
suggestions?
is there any possibility that the oil filter or it's installation could be a problem?
Probably a blown head gasket, but could also be a cracked head.
If there's oil where the coolant should be, and you've been running on very low oil for a while, you could have other issues now too.......

ok went and had the coolant system flushed. Talked to the mechanic there and he was looking in the direction of possible injector leak since there's NO coolant in the oil (crankcase) but there was 8 quarts of oil in the coolant. Says the pressure on the oil side of the possible injector leak would be much greater than the coolant pressure side.
Got the van back and drove it a day for work and looked this morn and it's full of oil again. This sux. Either way I go it's going to cost the equivelant of buying a used truck.
would using a tester like the Auto Enginuity give me clues where the problem might be without taking it in and letting the dealership rack up hundreds of $$ finding it?
No, the meccanic is on the right path . What you have just described is probably a cracked injector sleeve / cup You need a special tool to remove this . Someone has the tool on this site or made it . It is alot of money like you say and I believe it might involve engine removal. There are many posts on this topic along with pictures of the tool. It looks like a slide hammer used for body work. I think you need to remove the heads. So in a Van it is easier to remove the engine then do them all in my opinion . At least thats what I think. Maybe look around for a good used engine short block and swap your injectors and be done with it . . .
