E-Series VansTechnical discussion of topics related to vans powered by any of the Navistar engines. This covers a broad number of years, but there isn't enough demand to split it any further.
I'll receive the new 4" exhaust system from WarpSpeed on Thursday, and Meineke will install it on Friday. With this larger exhaust, should the PCM be reset with a battery disconnect before we fire it up?
Thanks, Mark, for the quick reply. How about if I change the chip to a more aggressive one than what I have? Should the PCM be reset then? And to clarify, just what would dictate a PCM reset?
Maybe I've confused myself with all the reading of other posts. I thought that the PCM stored engine and trannie settings in memory and if anything is changed, the PCM should be reset in order to adapt new settings based on new equipment. Is this not true? As you probably know, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. Thanks for any advice.

And I thought this was very clear.

This still applies:

The 7.3L PCM does not store [u]ANYTHING.[/u There is no reason to reset it, as there is nothing in the PCM to reset.
Many people think that there is something to reset, and it can't hurt to do it, but it also can't do anything to help. Disconnect both batteries, turn the headlights on, and get on with it.

Hello again, Mark. First of all thanks for the replies. I always do a search before I ask questions, and then try not to ask stupid questions. But when I do ask, I honestly need clarification and obviously, your answer was not clear, or I would not have followed up with other questions. I'm not a retired Ford Engineer; I'm a retired army officer and retired high school math teacher. Again, I appreciate your replies but not the sarcasm.
Sorry. I tend to get that way when someone asks a question, I answer it, and they ask the same one again. My wife whacks me up side of the head for doing that all the time.

No problem, Mark; perhaps I read more into your reply than was intended. It's difficult to ascertain the mood of the poster. I honestly appreciate the valued advice that you and others give this board. Where would we novices be without you?

Guys and gals, I don't want to burn any bridges here, but a very simple solution is:
If you don't want to reply to a post, DON'T!! No one is forcing you to. I, and I feel most others, are here for one thing: to get a few answers. If I knew the answers, or if I could find them on a search, I wouldn't post.

I agree that most of us are here for answers, I was just trying to add a little humor. I meant NO HARM to you. If my comment did then I will be the FIRST to apologize. I am not an engineer by any stretch of the imagination. I have worked on cars "on the side" for quite a while. Sometimes what WE see as common knowledge, is not to others and we need to be reminded of that fact. I only meant to poke fun at myself, I think that we all need a laugh once in a while.

Well, darn! I guess I'm just jumping too quickly lately, and have had to back up twice in the same thread. Like Mark posted, sometimes my wife has to smack me to keep me from jumping. No offense intended chuck, LOL.
