Rear Locker Options

While trying to move my open trailer away from the side of my house today in the snow, I realized something-- open diffs suck.

Has anyone upgraded their factory open diff with either an aftermarket replacement, or an insert locker like a Powertrax or a Lockright? I'd really love to have at least a real 2wd in my manly E350.

Re: Rear Locker Options

Did you forget to engage the transmission pan. (insert smirk here) You can see what I have now, but I don't know if they make the ARB for the "semi float" axle. I did put a Lock Right in my 1987 E250 light duty with the semi float D60 about 8 years ago. After less than 1 year it started making some big scary noises (more than usual), I opened it up for a "look see", it turns out that the "side gears" did not sit as deep in the sides of the carrier as the stock "side gears". So the bearing surface of the carrier was being worn away and the Lock Right was moving around in directions it should not have. It was great FOR OFF ROAD USE ONLY while it was in. On road driving in rain or snow required going slower in corners and you must apply steady even power ALL the way thru the corner (in real world driving you can't do that) or else sliding will occur. The automatic lockers are more abusive to the whole drivetrain because they have more backlash built in. Tony
