So I want to turbo my 7.3 IDI

....and I ain't gonna waste money on a kit. I also want to do it cheap. So what's a good used turbo? Is a waste gate needed on a diesel?

I can fab just about anything I need, exhaust and intake plumbing, oil lines, intake box, etc. Figured I'd put the turbo down low and use a scavenge pump for oil return.

Looking mainly for increased economy here, with a little kick in the pants just for fun.

I put a Banks turbo system on my IDI. It cost me $2100 with the mandatory TransCommand controller. Unlikely that they're still available, but you could check. I loved the thing, but I never saw any increase in fuel economy

Banks kit is still available. I'm really thinking more along the lines of doing the "kit" myself. I read the entire online Banks manual as well as looked at what's in the kit. I really just need to know what would be a good turbo for this van and work from there. I can fab everything else I need. Besides I want to mount the turbo down low and not bring all that extra heat up into the engine bay. I also don't need to worry about emmissions. Already thinking of some sort of trans control, TCI or Baumann top the list right now. I plan to restore / modify this van to suit me for many years. It's solid with low miles and low hours on the hour meter (before it broke)
