Successfully installed a 1999 F-350 cluster gauge (with tachometer) in my 1997 PSD E-350 van.
The cluster replacement took about 2-3 hours, but it took a lot longer trying to figure out the electrical differences between the original and the new cluster.
An All-Data DVD was used for gathering information.
The changes can be summarized as follows:
1. Changed numerous pin location within the three existing harness connectors.
2. Added a new wire for the tach input.
3. Converted two indicator lights on the new cluster from hot source, to ground.
4. Eliminated an existing resistor and a transistor from the new cluster.
5. Added new 100k resistor to the circuit board to bring the tach frequency within the adjustment limits.
6. Made some minor changes to the plastic mounting.
Everything is running like a charm, and if somebody would like to do the same conversion, I could provide additional detailed information.

Cool, good job. I always wonder what exactly was the logic in not giving us one from the factory. I'm glad i did this mod also as i use the tach daily, when my tach sensor went out i knew instantly it or the wires going to the sensor were bad, without the tach i woulda been clueless. Only wouldn't had a blinking OD light.
Also, when you're in a rain storm say... it's always nice to be able to look down and know your engine is okay. The rain will be too loud to hear the engine so the tach is your only way of knowing everything is running okay.

Petty: I just picked up a cluster from a 1999 F-250 diesel and am planning to install it in my 98 E350 w/Quigly 4x4. How about posting more details on your installation. Sounds like you've done everything that I will have to.
I noticed that as an added bonus, there is a 4wd indicator in the cluster that will allow me to get rid of the big honken indicator light that Quigley originally installed when they did the 4x4 conversion.

My 97.
The only lamp i could not get to work is the cruise lamp.
4x4,4x4low lamps are great. But having the low fuel lamp was as good as getting the tach.

Bill,
I like that a lot. Time to hit the dealer to get wiring diagrams for the F250. I can see that making the 4x4 and 4x4low lamps work would be straight forward but how did you get the Low Fuel to work? Is the circuitry to turn it on included in the cluster or is there another connection to the ECU required?
Another question: The F250 cluster that I have came from a truck with a manual transmission so there was a blank insert installed where the gear selector indicator is normally located. In your installation, did you use the indicator from your van or the one from the F-truck?

PM me a fax # i will send some notes on the install. I tried to scan but will not work. My cluster was a 2000 and installed in a 1997. The low fuel lamp is a freebie, it works from in the cluster off of the resistance of the fuel level gauge. As far as the trans indicator the blank pops out and yours pops in. You have to use the clear cover from the van on the f-cluster.
The only real thing to look out for is my 97 cluster lighted up BLUE and the 2000 cluster is GREEN. I also changed everything in dash that lights up from a later model van so now everything is GREEN.

Re: Successfully installed a 1999 F-350 cluster gauge (with tachometer) in my 1997 PSD E-350 van.
petty, MADVAN and all,
I picked up a 1999 F250 cluster a while back for my 1999 van. Had my brother check All-Data at his work and he came up with very little info on the 1999 F250 wiring. Great detail on E350 wiring, but almost nothing on F250. As a result, cluster has been sitting gathering dust. Just happened to catch petty's post this morning.
I'd be VERY interested in the details of your swaps.
Thanks again for the info you've posted so far! Stu

Bill,
Thanks for the PMs and the copies of your notes. I'll ask my brother to check the 2000 F-Series info in All Data. Still not sure why he couldn't find anything on 1999s...
Hopefully petty will reply with more of his info too.
astr,
I'd be interested in hearing how your install goes too...
Thanks again for all of your help! Stu

Where else but eBay? Search for "Ford Diesel Cluster". That's where I got mine anyway... It was just under $100 if I remember correctly... Couldn't find any locally at the time... Stu
