Re: Successfully installed a 1999 F-350 cluster gauge (with tachometer) in my 1997 PSD E-350 van.
Probably you have most info from Bill.
If I can answer some specific questions please ask.
BTW, In my case I did not touch the odometer. But it could be taken apart...the one I have is not electronic. The electronic ones need a chip reprogramed.

petty,
Thanks for the reply!
I'm looking to swap a 99 cluster in my 99 van.
Bill sent me his notes on the connector pin swaps he performed installing his 2000 F-350 cluster in his 97 E-350. Looks like only a few don't get changed around.
Can you provide pin swap data for your 1999 cluster (if it's not the same as Bill's)? Also can you provide info on other cluster mods (resistor change, calibrating tach, etc...)?
Anything you could provide would be helpful.
Thanks! Stu

Re: Successfully installed a 1999 F-350 cluster gauge (with tachometer) in my 1997 PSD E-350 van.
Other than obtaining the cluster and the factory wiring diagrams, I haven't made any further progress towards installing the '99 F250 cluster in my '98 van. I'm trying to locate some extra connectors to plug into the back of the cluster so that I can run the cluster on the bench. My hope is to resolve the oil pressure "idiot" gage at the same time and make it work like a real gage.
If either Stu or Bill could email me Bill's notes on his install, it would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry guys, but my diagrams will not help you very much. Almost every year is different. You must make your own diagrams by comparing side-by-side your existing cluster with the one you change.
Some funny setup may be on ABS, where you may have to eliminate a trensistor and some resistors from the flex. board.
On the lights swithed from hot to ground, you must scrape the hot leg from the flex board, and solder a wire from the socket to ground .
The tach could be brought back to calibration by inserting a resistor in series with the existing adjustment pot.
I can find lots of 5.4L clusters. The obvious difference is the 6k rpm tach, and lack of "diesel fuel only". I'm not too picky so long as I can make it work.

Mitsubishi S6U, S6R, 6D14; Mirrlees National KVSSM; DDC/MTU 12V2000; Cat 353, 398, 3306, 3406
I got the 5.4L cluster installed. Swapped some pins... all the gauges work now.
EDIT: I found the PCM and tapped into pin 19 (white w/pink tracer). I had leftover grounds after I shuffled the wires in the connectors, so I stole one and spliced it to my new tach wire. Tach works now, but I think its a bit off.
Since I used a gas cluster, I don't have a wait-to-start or water-in-fuel light. Instead, I made the security light work (key with buster sign over top) for the wait-to-start. I trimmed the hole a little to fit a standard dash lamp, and added a jumper to ground the other side of the socket.

Does anyone still have the info for this install? I have sent a pm to Madvan and Petty and have had no response. I would like to do this soon. Please help!
Thanks.

More to come but I won't bore you with that crap till its done.
I just did mine. 99 f cluster in my 03 van. Had to repin most of it, some colors were the same, some were different. I was also able to remove the 600,000 mile odometer and install my original 173,000. It just pops out with a little force.
Everything was working fine for a few weeks, but now my voltmeter is acting up. Seems the bumps can get it to jump around. Just to be sure, I tapped into the red/y wire with a multimeter and drove around for a while, and of course it never happened. AE does show 14.0 v when the gauge is going haywire. So something must be loose.
I did have to cut off the top left mounting ear to get it installed. So now there are only 3 bolts holding it in, but it's not going anywhere.
RPM,
Did you have to add or remove any transistors or resistors? I think I've got my pin locations figured out on paper. I just need to know where to get the wire for the tach pin location and the info on the transistors and/or resistors.
Thanks in advance.
