E-Series VansTechnical discussion of topics related to vans powered by any of the Navistar engines. This covers a broad number of years, but there isn't enough demand to split it any further.
i installed ITP's pickup kit and removed the mixxer gizmo but because the van tank has that blasted plastic bucket i was only able to install about an 18'' diesel submerggent hose to the return line and try to curve it over the plastic bucket to the bottom of the tank the best i could .was wondering what you guys thought of this ? i am kinda affraid the hose might float when tank is full but not sure if it will affect anything. was wondering if any of you did yours this way or had a better solution? i also didn't modd the vent or filler neck for fear of debris in my new tank because i had so much damage when the old tank delamed. Dennis recomended the the fuel hose for the return line rather than metal for fear if a metal line contacted the tank it might start the coating to wear of agian, not to mention due to limeted space i doubt you could use metal line .THANKS,Wade

I had the same thoughts. They were if return line is high it could cause foam returning or low it has to fight off the weight of the fuel in the tank to return. Just over thinking. Mine is mounted like yours.
As far as the fill neck. Remove the 3 screws at the fill cap, Remove the 2 hose clamps. That removes the filler tube. I used a die grinder to gut the tube. Then reinstall. You will not regret doing this.

[/ QUOTE ] When your tank is full, this won't be a problem. When your tank is low, you have introduced the potential to create a lot of foam, as the free end of your return hose bounces up and down and sprays fuel all over the forward end of the tank interior.
I modified the metal line furnished with the ITP kit:
I cut it and bent it slightly so that it would place the end of a section of rubber fuel hose inside the round (bucket?) baffle as far as possible from the pickup without actually touching the baffle. I clamped a short section of leftover stainless tubing to the end of the hose, and then clamped the orange rubber reed-style check valve close-coupled to the end of the hose.

May your road stay clear & dry, may your fuel never gel, and may you never be outsmarted by your idiot lights.
I'm a little worried, cause I used high pressure injector hose for my hose.(hope it doesn't fall apart.I should put a piece in a jar with fuel)I put a piece of hose on about 10" long & over the baffle box. concerns about foaming, foam floats & pick-up is on bottom. The tank would have to be really empty to get air & thus if engine clacks more, you better get to filling station quick! My thoughts.
Darth ,I dont think it comes out with that much force to spray. (more like good dribble) I can hear mine when its only got about 5 gals in tank.
THANKS again guys, just wanted to make sure i am on the same page as you guys with the modds , i will leave it the way i have it for now , at a later time i was contemplating drilling a hole in the top of the tank installing one of those bulkhead type fittings and a metal return tube with a small piece of hose on the end for fear of contact with the tank far away from the sender and eliminating the stock return line. this will have to be a summer project lying on my back in sub zero weather was cool when i was 19 but now at 41 with a tweaked back its a little tough.also bill i will do your filler neck modd THANKS,Wade

I was the guy who helped put this kit together and iirc, there should be a stainless tube with a 45* bend in it that attaches to the return tube via a imersion rated hose. You do NOT want to have the return fuel being dumped back into the plastic pan where the fuel pick up is located as it WILL cause foaming. The little pans is in there so that you don't run out of fuel on a hill when the guage shows half a tank still there...
If you just use a hose and lay it in the pan, it will be very foamy at low tank levels and the hose will bounce around. The purpose of the metal was to keep the retun line on the floor of the tank. There should have been two o-rings included that were to slide on to the extra tube so there was no metal to metal contact .....
Did Dennis change the kits?
Also, you need to use an immersion rated hose or the outer casing will start to deteriorate and start clogging your fuel filter. might take a while, but it will happen.

AFAIK Dennis no longer offers a van specific kit. You buy the truck kit and modify it to suit.
In terms of submersible hose, I know there is discussion on the correct hose type in the Little Secrets. LarryM had a link to some hose in McMaster Carr I think. I believe 30R9 or 30R10 hose is submersion rated but not sure.
