For those who have installed dual alternators

Is it possible to mount just one alternator towards bottom of engine? Is there a seperate bracket for just that one?
I would like to make room on top and mount a single on bottom
Thanks, Dann

This was the route I planned on going to make room for intercooler plumbing. I have a ford pully that could be welded on a small plate and then bolted to the top alt bracket. Was hoping the regular serpentine belt would then work. Still haven't gotten around to doing the intercooler. But it is on the list.

Intercooler is my thought at this point. Can you use the amublance bracket and mount one alternator on bottom? That would be the ideal.

I have factory dual alts -- and I think the lower one (at least) is physically smaller than the standard upper (or single) one. Not sure if a smaller one alone is enough to run the truck.

Thank for the info. I don't want dual alternators, just one. If I could mount the one I have on the bottom that would be ideal. Is the bracket you have one or two brackets? Is the idler on the top or bottom bracket? Also, if one was to mount the alternator on bottom, could there be a serpentine belt that would fit the new configuration. I have the part number for the ambulance package alternator bracket, but don't really want to buy unless I know it's gonna work. I have her apart and I'm going to do everything I can to get an intercooler in there.

Hey nsnunes, is your bottom alternator smaller in size or just smaller amperage output. In other words, will the top alt. bolt on bottom bracket?

The top altenator is the pully so if you want to re route you will need to fab up a small pullyand bolt it to the same bracket that held the ALT. This is why I kept a small Ideler pully.

I believe they are different size, and possibly power output. Not sure how much.

yes you can fab one up to do that but you have to remember a few things
one it must turn the same way or else itll work in reverse (motor not generator)

and it must be heat sheilded down there that close tothe block

also a dual would be smaller id use 3/8 plate and make a mount that bolts to the oil pan bolts and maybe a bolt on the front of the block

then add an idler pully to tighten it up

Iv'e been looking at my setup and there is no way to have room for the top alternator to mount on the bottom. Just not enough space. On top she sits back from the front of the block and I just can't see there's enough room on bottom. Fabricating a bracket is not a big deal for me but I don't see the OEM to be mounted on bottom. Anyway, I'm now thinking of a slimline or steamline alternator that can put out the amps like the OEM to mount on bottom. Somehow I need space to get an intercooler in there. Any suggestions would be appreciated or if there is a shorter alternator out there that would work, please let me know. I have her torn down now and if it takes 3-4 months of R&D, I don't care. I want to exhaust the options and pass them along on this site. Headers are definately going on in a month and there will be a jig made to copy. Just getting started.
On a side note, I got the broken glow plug out. I will post do's and don't about glow plug removal if anyone is interested. Gonna install my Stage II's this week. Making all the room in the engine compartment I can. I can see moving things around, making new brackets for glow plug relay and whatever is in the way.
Dann
