E-Series VansTechnical discussion of topics related to vans powered by any of the Navistar engines. This covers a broad number of years, but there isn't enough demand to split it any further.
I took my new 2004 E350 SMB 4X4 conversion to my local Ford dealer to have its breakin oil changed yesterday, and was informed that there's a recall on the Torqueshift to fix some bolts on the reverse gear housing that back themselves out and eat the adjacent thrust washer. All of which involves between 5 and 11 hours of work under warrantee.
Since I've got an Atlas transfer case, shifters, wiring, and driveshaft bolted to the back of the transmission which will probably have to come off to get to the tailshaft area of the transmission, I'm not sure I trust a Ford dealer to put it back together right.
Recall on 2004 TorqShifts:
Certain trucks built from 3-8-04 through 6-24-04 may experience a failure of the low/reverse planetary assembly. Specifically one or more of the planet gear pinion shafts may walk out of the carrier. If this occurs metallic contamination of the fluid will occur and will cause harsh or slipping shifts and/or harsh or delayed engagements in forward or reverse. Trucks affected by this recall will have the low reverse planetary replaced if no damage has occured, or will have the transmission overhauled and repaired as needed, along with replacement of the transmission cooler, if damage has occured.

This is from Dieselmann's 6.0 Powerstroke bulletins. I guess I better check my build date and if vans are affected. My van was shipped to SMB's dealer 3/15/04 so hopefully out of the range.

BTW - What do you mean by break in oil? The manual does not reference it or did I miss it? I asked my dealer at 3000 miles when I was in for a speedo recal and he said 5000 mile first oil change. I'm 200 miles shy of that so.......... just curious now.

I agree there's no requirement or recommendation to change "breakin" oil, I'm just compulsive about getting any manufacturing residues out of the motor. Probably totally unnecessary, but make me feel better anyway.

Next on the List: a blown tranny!
my build date was 5/15/04 approx. 19,000 mile s so far, some very minor infrequent erractic shifting after slowing down during highway run in traffic, but after few minutes, all is good.
wonder if i ll get recall notice ?

Mine was built in that timeframe. Ford has already taken my trans completely apart to replace the porous casing. Wonder if it has to come apart again? What will they say about the F-350 transfer case now on the end of the transmission?

My service dept told me today that there were no recalls on the torqueshift transmission, just explorers and lincolns. I think she did say something about customer satisfaction program. I wonder if this is somehow related to the clunking noise I sometimes get?

I am concerned that my van may have this problem, but that Ford's computer systems won't indicate that it is affected.
Under certain conditions, a noise kind of like rivets on brake rotors, emanates from the tranny. It has had the delayed/harsh engagement from the beginning.
Although I got the van in July, it was nearly completely assembled somewhere between June 17th and June 22nd. It went from the Ford factory to TDM, who installed the seats, and then it went back to Ford for final inspection on June 25th.
In brief, the tranny got stuffed in there during the affected time period.

I called my dealer; gave them my VIN and they ran it and came back with the recall. Had to order the reverse planet assy - on national back order - should be available mid to late Feb.
The tech is going to be good at taking 5R110's apart - it's the 2nd complete disassembly for mine.
Wonder what they will say about the transfer case on the back of the tranny now?
Mike
