E-Series VansTechnical discussion of topics related to vans powered by any of the Navistar engines. This covers a broad number of years, but there isn't enough demand to split it any further.
Took it in Tuesday last week for the recall. Asked for my loaner car, and was told they didn't give them for work like this. I replied: 'That's strange, this letter from Ford says I can get a car. Lo and behold, I was given a loaner.
A week later I called to get the staus of my van. They said they found other problems when they got the tranny apart. Oh and by the way, they would like the loaner car back - Ford won't pay them for their loaner cars, but they can give me a Hertz car that Ford will pay for. So, I went down and swapped cars with them. And I got to talk to the tech working on my van.
He showed me the damaged shaft and support. Said he has the parts, but not the special Ford tool to install the inards into the TQ housing. The tool is on order. I asked how they installed the parts back into the housing in Dec when they replaced the housing because it was porous and leaking. The tech said another tech did the work and probably that was what damaged the parts he is now replacing.
Boy, this van loves to spend time in the shop.
- 1 week for a Check Engine light (EGR valve)
- 5 days in Northern Canada for 2 bad injectors
- 3 weeks to diagnose and replace transmission case
- 3 weeks for 4wd conversion
- 2 weeks and holding for 04B24 recall
Anybody else beat 9 weeks in the shop in the first 9 months? Admittedly, I've skewed the results with the voluntary 4wd conversion, but it has been in the shop alot!

no problems here with mine, other than recalls/service notices for front springs and tranny... i m afraid to bring in to fix for same reasons what s happened to you... figure if tranny blows up, will get new tranny..
i ll have to mention to dealer if i do bring in, make sure u got all the tools for the replacement. i m sure they ll love that..
hope you get back on the road soon.

Started mine up last week to bring to the dealer to see if they can fix my 2nd to 3rd gear clunk(which they cant)and low and behold as soon as it started the check engine light was on .Ended out being a bad fuel sending unit in the tank.
Uprated front springs = 1/2 day in the shop (including mounting up new shocks all round)
add another 1/2 day for the three different times i had castor, camber and toe checked
tranny recall= 1/2 day in the shop.
My service manager hooked me up and opened a service ticket then i took the truck in when the parts arrived-If we had done the recall by the letter it would have been down 3.5 weeks just waiting on the parts.
no leaks, codes or other problems so far

Yeah, I had the parts ordered. After they came in, I took the van in and when it was apart they found other parts to replace. After those parts came in, the tech discovered they didn't have the tools to reassemble the trans.
I forgot about the 2 days to replace the front springs. I had them re-align it after the replacement.

I'm dropping mine off tomorrow for 1st oil change (5500 miles) and tranny recall check. I absolutely need it back for 2500 mile trip by March 17. Maybe I should reconsider Or ask for a loaner equivalent to mine! hahaha

Tony at Kearny Mesa Ford here in San Diego says they have done quite a few of these already so no parts or tool problems expected. I had thought it was a check and a possible repair but now find out its an immediate reverse planetary replacement. Other than the speedo recal this is the first service visit, also first oil change. $75 oil + filter with maintenance checks, battery, belts, air filters and brakes. Seems reasonable. I declined the tire rotate which also was included. They say 2 days. BTW - Diesel at $2.49 at one of my stations.

I think the recall period was only for 2004 (pickups and vans) for a several month range starting around March. Now it could have been expanded later. So when did V-10's get the 5 speed? 2005?
[ QUOTE ]
Anyone know if the recall applied to V-10 vans too?

OK - my van is DONE, 3 days in the shop, will pick up tomorrow. Tony apologized as he forgot I had that extra work involved (Atlas II transfer case). SO, will do some test driving this weekend. Just got off the phone with the dealer. Tech says he has everything he needs and the van will be back on the road Tuesday! That will be exactly 3 weeks after I dropped it off.
I sure hope so!
