Trans Temp Varies

Last night on way home the trans temp gauge would fluctuate(sp) ie 125 degrees to 133 degrees....would rise to 133 then graduallly register down to 127 ...remain stable for 5 miles or so and then go through the rise and fall cycle....fluid levels are norman, winter-front installed (has openings to cooler), new tru-cool 28,000gvw cooler has been in operation for a month or so with no problems ....I'm starting to wonder if anything to trans internally could be going bad (pump)or if this is just a bad sending unit for trans temp gauge...No leaks or hoses in a bind...
This am I started van and trans temp registers 91 degrees(it never has registered that high...I have cyberdyne digital and it doesn't even register until it's 70 degrees )Prior to today all am starts have t/t gauge registering LO until it hits 70 degrees...any thoughts tks bd

Re: Trans Temp Varies

SIXIRON

Two questions
A- Do you still have trans oil in rad?
B- Are you plugging in PSD at night?

Follow your trans cooler oil lines. You will see they go into the rad. When you plug in the heater it heats the coolant which heats trans fluid slitely this could be why your trans temp gauge is higher at start up. Also with rad covered with cardboard you can get a flux in trans oil temp for the same reason.

[/ QUOTE ] Sounds normal to me.

The fluid in the radiator doesn't stay at one temperature. As the engine's thermostat opens and closes to maitain engine temperature the radiator temperature will vary. This will vary the amount of cooling the transmission cooler gets, which varies the transmission temperature. There's nothing you should do about this, it's just the way it is.

Now do you see why Ford put a dummy gauge in the Superdutys? If that gauge moved up and down like yours does everyone would bring it to the dealer to fix it!

Re: Trans Temp Varies

Thanks Mark, I was hoping that you would read and post...I almost sent you a private msg ...guys like you make this site a real plus that you would share info ....I usually run a winter front(lund) has 2 nice openings at the trans cooler and I recently installed a tru-cool 28K in place of the stock coooler and I was beginning to doubt my installing such a large cooler was a good move.....2 weeks ago in Toledo in the wet snow the temp dropped to 70 degrees until I closed the front completely and it finally went up to 117 degrees...Thanks Mark

Re: Trans Temp Varies

My van is stock as a rock.....no auxilary coolers or anything.

The tranny temp guage (Autometer) changes fairly slowly.

Certainly no jumping around.

My two cents worth.
