Transfer Flow Installed

Well its in. What a pain in the neck. I see why Transfer Flow says the Econoline is the most difficult vehicle to put a aux. tank in. They do it in a day (8 hrs)at their facility.
It took me about 14 hrs total to put it in. I think I could do it a second time in about 6 hrs. The directions leave alot to be desired. However I got everything right the first time and probably took a little more care the a shop would have installing it. Works great and its pretty cool to look down and see the LCD screen read "TTL 54 gal" 28 frnt 26 rear

Re: Transfer Flow Installed

thats excellent! if you were thinking of coming to the norcal rally in august, Transferflow will be there, and lots of people would be interested in your tank and your install experience. I have a 1996 E-350 gasser, and a bigger/aux tank is on the "someday" list for it.

Re: Transfer Flow Installed

Wow Drew - you're a braver man than I! I had Sportsmobile do the original install and then I took it straight to Transfer Flow when it had problems. It took Transfer Flow a whole day to diagnose and cure the problem (kinked hose somewhere) but it's been (almost) trouble-free ever since. It's awesome to have 54 gallons of fuel on board!

BTW - have you checked the accuracy of your gauge? Mine seems to be a bit short in that is shows I have more fuel that I really do. Hasn't really been a problem, but I wish it were more accurate.

Re: Transfer Flow Installed

I have not put more then 10 miles on it since the install. Though I was pleased after I did the work and thought it would be a ***** to fill fast with the hoses as they are to find that it would fill on full pressure from the pump all the way to the top with out clicking off.

Drew

54 gal is pretty cool

Re: Transfer Flow Installed

I'm having this done on my E-350 today (and probably the next couple of days!) at a local shop (dealer). The consensus is that it is a major pain in the ass, but cool nonetheless (which is why I'll spend the money for the effort).

Drew, how has it worked out over the last month or so? My "guy" claims that he's made no warranty repairs (installs a lot), but I gather he's not done a van before (figures, I would be his first) and he got the full run-down from TF. Just wondering about problems (?)...

Re: Transfer Flow Installed

I had mine installed a little over a year ago. Right now my display is only working intermitantaly. The first suggestion from their tech crew didn't fix the problem. I'm going to be checking all the electrical connections today. The system is working fine, the problem is with the trax ufs display.

Re: Transfer Flow Installed

So far so good. Just returned from a 2400 mile round trip pulling about 9k to the San Jaun Mountains of Colorado. Can't imagine doing that trip without the aux. tank. I installed mine myself. Worked perfect from the begining. Still no trouble.

Re: Transfer Flow Installed

That's good to know...

I'm about 250 miles from TF in Chico, CA and considered making the trek to have them install it to avoid any headaches. Decided to go with a local dealer instead (only 25 miles away) in case I needed follow-up repair work -- only difference is that there will be MUCH more labor charges now. This guy already talked to a TF tech to get the scoop. This will be his third day... TF claimed it's an 8-10 hour install, I gather the most difficult of them all... I'm figuring longer than that. Was it as much of a pain in the ass as they claim?

Question about operation: Do the tanks get used evenly until empty, or does the aux tank keep the main tank full until it runs out?

Re: Transfer Flow Installed

re the question about operation: the tanks are emptied simultaneously but the oem tank always has a few more gallons than the aux tank

Re: Transfer Flow Installed

Drew -- re-read you post, sounds identical to my story.

It took the guy 14 hours -- said he could have done it in 6... Why?

1) The instructions don't match the blueprint. In fact, it's way off in places. They refer to parts that don't exist or have already been used. Also simply gives directions that are physically impossible.

2) It was not designed for vans with Rear A/C -- he had to fabricate a new bracket to relocate a couple of cooling lines in the fender well in order to run the filler neck.

3) Not designed for vans with a rear "step" bumper...

All in all, I'm glad it was him and not me. He will be having a nice "talk" with the engineers at TF about this one. He's done many tanks before and made many suggestions, but never had as much trouble before.

Hope it all works...

Re: Transfer Flow Installed

Guys, are you paying a Ford dealer their typical $50/hr or more 14 hours of shop time? Yikes! I like the idea of a bigger tank, but when the labor costs add up to as much or more than the tank, I am not sure about that. Heck, my bladder has to be emptied sooner than I need to fill up anyway.

Re: Transfer Flow Installed

Oh no... It was closer to $65/hour by a local RV shop...

It sounds expensive (and it is - labor and extras cost as much as the tank), but it only had to be done once. For me, I also use a wheelchair, though I can pump my own fuel often enough, I want to keep it to a minimum -- not so many stations around here with BOTH an available attendant AND diesel. And right now I'm sick of running on empty... For the length of my ownership it'll be well worth it.

And having 54 gallons will be awesome.

Re: Transfer Flow Installed

I had Sportsmobile put mine in when I ordered it. I now have 23,000 miles on the van w/o any problems. Except some pumps make it difficult to get the fuel in most are not bad. The way the transfer pump works is (I might have the numbers wrong but...) when the main tanks is around 4 gals less than the auxillory tank it then pumps fuel to the main until even. I have driven it down to 2 and 2 before fill up and it worked great. I usually don't go that low but diesel can sometimes be a challenge to find in the city.

Re: Transfer Flow Installed

I got lucky on my last trip to Colorado. On the way home I got down to 0/0 . Talk about running on fumes. I put 54 galons in . So the Transfer Flow LCD is very accurate. I won't wait that long to fill up again. I WAS LUCKY
