E-Series VansTechnical discussion of topics related to vans powered by any of the Navistar engines. This covers a broad number of years, but there isn't enough demand to split it any further.
The new ride has the tiny tank - just ain't gonna cut it for road trips. A TransferFlow 46 gallon Quigley tank is in my future.
Anyone install one on their own? The stock one doesn't look to be a complex removal, but I'm not sure what's involved in putting the larger one back in.
And how do they get all the extra capacity? The one in there now takes up all available space I can see. Does it just sit lower?
Thanks,
Bill

you are close enough to just go to TF and have them install it. I highly recommend them. plus its a free tank of diesel when they calibrate the guage...

I installed a 46 gal tank about 18 months ago. Pretty easy. Tank hangs down a few inches below the frame, not a big problem for ground clearance. Driving range is great, > 850 miles.
I'm currently adding Ford E350 35 gal. cutaway tank in the rear frame for veggie oil and additional diesel capacity. Lots of work installing heated fuel lines, tank heater and Davco diesel pro filter.
Sweet Quigley you got there, welcome to PSD Vanland.
I installed the 46 gal tank myself last fall (see pics in my signature), it wasn't too hard. I couldn't find a local installer that had ever done one before, & they wanted $200-250 to install it, so I did it myself. Go ahead & do the fuel pickup mod (thousands of posts about it throughout this forum), lower the fuel pickup line so you have more "usable" fuel. That tank is big, it uses every bit of open space under that side of the van, and it is a couple of inches taller, the extra range is worth it.

Thanks for the install advice, folks - I'm heading up to WA early next week, probably too short of notice to get TF to do the install on the way up, but I'll give them a call. If nothing else, hopefully the tank is in stock and I can pick it up to save on shipping.
For those of you who have done the install - somebody mentioned having the guage calibrated. Is this do-able by mere mortals, or is special equipment required?
Bill

Hey, a local guy! Nice van, haven't seen it around yet though... I'm around the WC/PH area a lot.

Hey Matt, small world - I'm over in P.H. right on the Lafayette border. Probably won't see the van too much - it's primarily going to be used as a travel/towing vehicle. Still, when I start to catch up with you on the mods, we'll have to get together to compare/contrast...
As an aside - I have perused the archives a bit, and I'm a little confused on what, if any aux tanks can be added in addition to the 46G midship tank. From your sig, it appears you have the standard Quigley 26G, in addition to an aft axle 27G tank? If so, any reason the aft axle tank wouldn't work with the 46G midship tank to get even more capacity?
If so, how's the setup work? Is it a transfer system, or do you switch between the tanks?
Bill

I did the same...picked up the tank in Chico on the way to LA. Freight would have been $125 to Seattle, CA tax was about $70.

Calibration: No problem, follow the included install instructions. The method is install pickup/sender, gauge will read low or E when tank is upright. Flip over tank, gauge should read full. Use some long jumper wires to extend the 2 sender wires.

Whats the average price tag for 46 gal tank?

Don't know if TF dealers discount them at all, but if you buy direct - read this and weep...

Don't feel so bad -- my aft-axle tank was around $2200 installed. Took a local shop 14 hours at $60 plus the cost of the tank. Still worth it, and easier than going to Chico... The replacement tank is a BARGAIN!

Yes and no. I can certainly be done (and I've seen one in person) but TF doesn't make the aft axle tank anymore due to lack of sales. Apparently stopped sometime on 2002. My front is 27 and the rear is 26... and it automatically pumps from the rear to the front, keeping them even all the way to empty, like having one big tank. I've considered going all the way to 72 gallons with both of them, but it's not high on the "list".
I would definite do something, 27 gallons simply sucks. The 46 is probably your only chance. If I was incredibly anal about it, I would even ask TF if they have anymore aft tanks, could make one special, or know of any used ones (fat chance) -- but it's also MUCH more difficult to install (see my prior post). BTW - They DO still make one specifically for handiicapped vans (I think), that is meant to replace the midship tank altogether. So if you REALLY wanted it that bad, I'm SURE something could be customized to make it happen.
I live around the PH Bart station. Have the only green 4x4 van in the area (nerf bars, aftermarket wheels, chrome grill and warn bumper) -- can't miss it. If you wanna talk mods, let me know, I've done a lot of research and know where to get things done locally...

It is a small world, I live in the Concord, CA area. I have used the aft tank in a wheelchair conversion van. We take out the OEM tank and use the TFI aft tank only. We move the spare tire to the interior of the van. It is a little tough to get the trailor hitch on with the aft tank.
I have the factory tow package... so I guess it's meant to fit. But the guy did say that the kit was not designed for the "step bumper" and "rear air". Hence some re-working to make things fit...
Methinks that the remaining aft tank kit could be used as a second tank if someone were to be willing to "go for it". With or without support from TF....

Will the 46 gallon tank fit a regular van? Or only the 4x4 because of the lift? Would be nice to add some extra range. The rear tank, aft axel sounds great for even more range, but would want the spare to stay. Asking a lot I know.
