turbo

what is the big black box that tees in to the turbo intake because the lid is broken and its not the air filter box can it be deleted and how thanks 02 e350 psd

Have a photo?
It could be the intake resonator or Crank case vent system.

Looking from the rear with the engine cover off, if it's on the right side of the turbo it's the intake resonator.

If it's cracked you could be pulling in dirty air. Not a good thing.

Several folks have installed a paint can lid in it's place in the intake air hose and clamped it in place. I believe they sealed it with a little silicone prior to installing it.

You may hear a little more intake noise at certain rpms if you make this modification, but it's better than sucking in dirty air in your case...

Yes as stated above its the resonator.
If removed and plugged you will have more intake noise. If the hole/lid is big, you are allready use to the noise, and allowing dirt to bypass your air filter.

At first i thought you were asking about the IDI.
