Turbo service is easy!

Decided that the turbo pedestal O-rings had leaked long enough and today was the day to change them out. Got the Vitron (?) (yellow) O-rings from the dealer and had the turbo off and reinstalled in about an hour! That's about 2 hours quicker than I thought it'd take me! Now if only the stock fuel filter wasn't such a hassle to change....

Where did you notice the leak?

I have something leaking down the back of my oil pan... but not a lot.

Re: Turbo service is easy!

I noticed a lot of oil accumulating in the valley. The leak was between the pedestal and the valley so I replaced both upper and lower o rings. I too have the leak coming down the back of the oil pan but I think that leak is from the transmission. I took some pictures with the turbo off if you'd like to see.

Re: Turbo service is easy!

I had some oil leakage around the valley. I noticed it dripping from the rear of the motor behind the starter. When I pulled the doghouse it looked like the head gasket was leaking. The turbo pedestal also looked suspicious.

Anyway, it turned out to be the intake manifold hoses. Since the crankcase is vented through the intake (pre-turbo) oil finds its way here and seeps through any loose fittings. A similar, bigger problem exists on the trucks because of all the intercooler plumbing.

I replace the stock clamps with some constant torque clamps from McMaster-Carr Supply Company, P/N 5325K32, for $6.44 ea. I also noticed the cast AL manifold has some rough spots where the hoses attached. I filed these areas smooth.

Here’s a picture of the new clamps installed.

I’m happy to report that after some 20K miles the valley is like a desert and no more oil leakage.

Something to checkout.

Re: Turbo service is easy!

I will get some pictures posted by this Saturday. I am also looking at getting some of the "constant torque" clamps for the turbo outlet piping. Have them on my work rig and no leaks. The ones on the van are sure messy and I think changing them out would greatly help on cleanliness.
