E-Series VansTechnical discussion of topics related to vans powered by any of the Navistar engines. This covers a broad number of years, but there isn't enough demand to split it any further.
Have had our van only a month and already the wife is complaining about having to wait to shut it down. I am assuming that the lack of an innercooler on our van turbos increases the risk of damage if shut down too hot. Is this correct? If so, it seems I may need to invest in some "protection".
Who out there is running a Turbo Saver or Turbo Temp Monitor? Who likes which and why?
Thanks in advance.
Jeff

I use the Turbo Saver w/the cruise control option.
With parking brake engaged, in park, I press the CC button once for every minute I want it to run without the key. After 10 "hits"(10 minutes), each time I press the button, it adds 10 minutes. I can have it run up to 240 minutes without the key.
By using EGT gauge as a start point ( what the temp is at that point) I usually set it for 1 to 3 minutes, to have it shut down at 300 degrees. Cold weather normally calls for a max of 2 to 3 mins. Summer time / towing, sometimes 4 to 5 minutes.
When my dog is traveling with me I use the Turbo Saver to keep the van cool or warm while I'm eating or in a retail shop that won't let dogs in. I just set the time I want it to run w/o the key.
In this case I use the AIC to ramp up the rpms to around 1200, to keep the AC cranking and the engine from lugging. All this without the key, van locked.
The latter is the main reason I chose the Turbo Saver. I don't think The Turbo Temp Monitor would let me do as much on the time set/key out.
The AIC is the key for what I do because I need to ramp the rpms up for extended periods of time.

I like the sound of your turbo saver set-up. Could you be more specific on the turbo saver (manufacturer, model number, installation, price). Thanks.
