E-Series VansTechnical discussion of topics related to vans powered by any of the Navistar engines. This covers a broad number of years, but there isn't enough demand to split it any further.
Hey all figured I would pick your brains. I bought a 1984 e350 4x4 with an automatic this winter and am just getting around to getting it dialed in. I am planning on converting the van into a camper. It was running doggy so I changed the fuel filter and now it motivates real nice. 4by works good but one of the hubs is tough to turn. By the looks of it its been that way for a while.
The auto is a 4 speed with an OD lockout on the dash. What transmission is this? The button does not look factory but works good. I was having a shifting problem. Seemed like the transmission wasnt getting the message from the tps so I jiggled the wires a bit and it works great now.
Im gonna need steering parts and dont know where to get them. Some of the components look custom. Shes a bit to sloppy so Im doing the tie rods a ball joint or two and possibly a bearing. Where is a good place to pick these parts up?
With the auto and the 4by what sort of mileage might I expect? It has dual tanks and they both work. Cost me 90 bucks to fuel up today one tank was 1/4 and the other 1/2 when I started. Any idea how much this puppy holds? I est. 60 gallons.
Whats the word on lift kits and some bigger rubber? It appears it has a factory limited slip. Works good too. I was very pleased to see that. Good place to get a reciever hitch? it has a ball on the bumper but its too high off the ground.
Im also thinking turbo and more fuel but that will be the last part of my project. Doesnt look like there is much room for a turbo. I sold three rigs this week to generate some cash. Ill see how far it gets me. TIA for any help.

It's probably an E4OD, but it's hard to tell since it isn't original. There was no electronic overdrive in the vans in 1984, so someone has changed the trans.
The trans is all a guess without seeing it. I personally would vote for an aftermarket aux overdrive bolted onto the factory C6. That would have been easy to add with the 4x4 conversion, as opposed to someone bolting in an E4OD after 1989 (Into a 5+ year old van).

Thank you for the linky. Definitely gonna shoot you some questions.
I must have bigger thanks. Had the equivalent of 3/4 of a tank on board and still bought 30 gallons to fill up. If the needles read wrong on the low side it could account for it though. Like the top 1/4 of the tank on the needle is actually half the fuel in the tank.
I had a 40 gallon tank in the rear of mine, but it was visable clearly from the rear.
Good vans. Ride rough, but with the diesel it should be better.

I dont mind the ride. Bit of a vibration at 65 though. Rides real nice at 55 and 75 though. Got her stuck real good a few days ago. Ground is still soft from breakup.
Filled it up today. Said it was almost empty but still only got 30 gallons in. Same as last time though it said it had a lot more fuel last time. Same pump even, not sure whats up with that.
Still a hair low on power but on flat land will do 80. I looked around a bit for the turbo upgrade and didnt see one. No smoke so I will see if I can figure out how to turn the pump up a hair. Only need about 15 more hp to make the hills.
I guess Im gonna see what I can match up at the local parts house for steering components. Shipping to alaska takes too long and Im impatient atm because fishing season is getting into full swing soon. Which is my main purpose for having the van. King salmon should be showing up locally in another week. Really want to catch some sea run dollies.
Alright I hit a dead end. I still have been unable to locate one tie rod. Its drivers side and has a reverse thread. That way you can just twist the tie rod adjusting sleeve to set it up proper. Any ideas?
Looks like their original steering system is obsolete. I'm sure all the parts have an OE application on a 1 ton pickup.
I suggest going to an auto parts store and have them pull drivers' side rod ends for early 80's GMC, Ford and Dodge. They don't have to be esxactly the same, as long as the taper is the same and the length is close.

I pulled everything I could. Couldnt find a reverse thread. I emailed danthevanman hopefully he will have an idea.
The drag link and the adjuster sleeve have both had a piece welded on. Some are obviously ford parts the others are not. Looks like a pretty good backyard mechanic had problems finding parts before and made his own fit.
