E-Series VansTechnical discussion of topics related to vans powered by any of the Navistar engines. This covers a broad number of years, but there isn't enough demand to split it any further.
Notice the van oil filter is different (about twice the size) from that for the pickups. Anyone know why? Can we assume it is a better filter 'cause it is bigger? Does the K&N filter sold by DIS and others still seem a filter of choice? Anyone know an especially high quality filter for our vans?

I wasn't aware that the van oil filter is bigger than the pick-ups. The part number is the same I think. The Motorcraft filter (I think it is Motorcraft 1995) is the only one that is stocked by Wal Mart. Let me know if I am over looking something.

Well, it wouldn't be the first time I've been confused but I went to a Navistar place and then looked at the DIS web site and the filter they have (Fleetguard from the one and the K&N from the other) for the 7.3 L PSD is about half the height of the one that I found on the van - and that appeared when I went to a local parts store and got a Purolater filter. I remember hearing bad stuff about Purolator when I owned my Dodge but I wanted to match the filter that was on the van so that's what I installed.
Like I say, I am easily confused but I can usually spot the subtle difference between a filter about 7" tall and one about 15" tall.... Of course, I never DO know what some parts good is trying to unload on me so I just take it home, crawl under the truck, and say something like, "Oh lookit here!"
Admittedly I haven't followed up on this with any in-depth research (that is what you guys are for - assuming someone here knows what is going on) but I will do so soon if nobody knows the answer.

I only changed my oil once on my new van. I got the part number of the oil filter from the PSD supplement that came with the van. I purchased the filter from Wal-Mart. The Motorcraft filter that I bought was the right part number and it was the largest filter on the shelf and it matched the size of the original filter.

To my knowledge there is only one (1) size filter for both the truck and the van. They are all two quart filters. I use either a WIX or Baldwin. There are many other great filters out there ... these two I can get around the corner so I use them.

The filter for the IDI is shorter then the 1995 Motocrap filter. I use the 1995 on my IDI no problem. Has any of you all tried to put 2 quarts in the larger filter? It don't fit if you pour it in from the oil bottles! I guess maybe, once the oil is doing it's thing in the motor, two quarts will be in the filter. Naw, I'm calling BS on the 2 quart rating! Of course the smaller ones don't hold one quart either. Help me put here.
Sounds like someone has been giving me filters for the IDI rather than the PSD. Hmmm, I'll verify this someday. How about the K&N shown by DIS? It appears in the picture/diagrams to be the shorter filter.
