Van Transmission Cooler Question

In the truck forum it seems the popular thing to do is replace the 7.3 transmission cooler with the V-10 trans cooler since it is bigger. Is the trans cooler for the V-10 Van likewise larger than the trans cooler used in the 7.3 van? If so Is it a worthwile swap?
Thanks,
ddog

Re: Van Transmission Cooler Question

Ddog,

I'm trying to remember some of the discussions we have previously had concrning auxillary transmission coolers.

Many of us have them. I don't.

So far, I have had no problem pulling my trailer in the Texas heat. The tranny rarely gets above 210°-215°. The fan lock in has only come on a couple of times when I was pulling uphill in fairly slow traffic with ambient temps in the 100° range.

However, I know a bunch of folks like the added safety that they receive with transmission coolers.

Not sure I'd pay a big sum for the V-10 cooler......I believe I'd just go ahead and get an auxillary cooler rather than replace the one I had......unless it was free, of course.

Re: Van Transmission Cooler Question

Thanks for the info. Still need to install my trans temp guage and see what I get towing my boat (22' GW Seafarer WAC). I never weighed it but estimate the total with trailer, fuel and all to be in the 5500-6000lb range. I've only been towing back and forth to the boat ramps so far (5-10 miles max)and seems to be fine.Read the v-10 cooler discussion in the "Secrets" and has pictures/discussion of the differences for the truck including location and comparison to the tru-cool max which is reportedly the same cooler/design as the oem. Just thought if the factory v-10 cooler for the van was bigger and a direct swap might be worthwhile. My buddy owns a body shop and gets 25-35% of list on Ford parts and the factory brackets and what not are usually more heavy duty than what comes with aftermarket coolers and fabrication is not usually required. My 93 didn't have a cooler besides the OTW in the radiator and I added one, fabricating brackets heavier thant the typical strap type ones that come with them.Just getting lazy in my old age and am willing to pay a little more for a direct bolt in if its available.I guess the next step if no one knows for sure is to check part numbers.
