Re: Vannies it can be done!!!

Really!!,

How about my 96? I pulled my cluster to clean it and thought it looked similar to the one in a 99 at work. Everytime I drive the van I am looking for the tach, really do miss it like the one in my 95 F model.

Re: Vannies it can be done!!!

Last night i found a flaw in the cluster conversion.
Something i never thought about till i drove at night.
In 97 the cluster lights up blue. The f-cluster lights up green.
Now cluster is green and the radio/center dash is blue.
Looks ok but not perfection. Might changeover to the indyglo face.

BTW--does anyone's van dash light up green. Maybe there is a change over year to green.
Chime in your year and color.

1992, green for me..

www.samantha.cc/Truck/truck3.html

From 92-96 it's green like mine, i wonder if the wiring up and what not would be the same as what you did on the earlier vans like mine..

Re: Vannies it can be done!!!

What makes the color? Maybe you can change the bulbs. But then again the plastic may be tinted diffusing the light in it's color. Maybe the bulbs have tinted covers on them? You are talking Superduty cluster, right? Now that I think about it I doubt if they would fit in my 96, SD's didn't even exist when mine was built. You aren't talking about the HD 97 and back clusters, are ya? I'm getting confused, didn't they change to a mechanical odometer on the SD's?

Re: Vannies it can be done!!!

the lighting is because of the tinted color duffusing stuff. The bulbs are just little 12 volt lights and have no tinting. I believe the super duty ones are green sorta like mine but the dials are orange, mine and/or ours is white dials, which i like however it would be nice to have a factory tach.

His wasn't built when super duties were around either, however they use this great stuff that's called interchangable parts, . So basically they are built to fit in the same space. Apparently the super duty clusters are the same size as at least the 97 van clusters. Dunno about the 92-96 yet. I know in 99 and 00 they used mechanical odo's, i believe the brand new trucks are digital odo's. but uh.. i dunno.

Re: Vannies it can be done!!!

I used a 2000 cluster. From 99 to 01 f-series the connectors to the cluster are the same as the 97 van, you just need a few more connector pins. You have to change the pinouts and some of the switching circuits from neg to positive/ pos to neg. The 99/01 cluster has the same odmeter as my van. The 02 and later f-cluster is digi readout and is completly different than the 97 cluster and pcm. Now the 97 van was the changeover year to the new dashboard that is still the same as of 03.
Now Iam wondering if there is a change in the color of the lighting from 97 to 03 in a van from blue to green. If its true i need to replace the fan/ac/heat control to a green one along with a radio to have a 100% match.

BTW--I have found the pinouts in the wiring dig for the e/f trucks are wrong seems to be a print error. Some connectors are reversed. This is in the clusters. pin1=pin16, pin2=pin15 ect.

Re: Vannies it can be done!!!

Way to go Bill!!! Really makes me wonder why they don't just install those from the factory--cost cutting, I guess. Sounds like a big project, maybe someday...(I'll add it to the growing list )

Well, the factory does have a little sense at least. The '04 clusters have a tach finally.

Re: Vannies it can be done!!!

in the change over of the insterment group, what about the tach, if the f group has the tach, was there a wire or wires for you to hook on to for the tach that came with the f insterment panel?
been thinking of adding a tach to my van, and was wondering if there was already wireing there for the tach to just hook in to, or if the senor kit that comes with some tachs was what I am going to need to add.

Re: Vannies it can be done!!!

Alaskapsdvan

Your question is what started this whole cluster install. Their are no aftermarket tachs available that will work useing the factory wireing. Aftermarket tachs work on a pulse and the factory works on HZ. You could just install and AIC and be done. The aftermarket tachs are wired to the alt or the damper of the motor. I wanted an OEM tach just like the F-series. In the van the PCM has the pinout for the tach and is dropped off in the harness. All i had to do was splice into the wire to operate the tach.

BTW- In 2000 the vans cluster is green. I have a buddy of mine donate his heat/ac control so now my dash is all green, but of course i like the blue better.
