E-Series VansTechnical discussion of topics related to vans powered by any of the Navistar engines. This covers a broad number of years, but there isn't enough demand to split it any further.
While browsing around and looking at linked pictures, I noticed that the PS vans had turbo and pipe wrapping. I was assuming it was "stock" since that IS a lot of heat to put by the access cover.
Did the turboed vans have wrapping from the factory? Or was that an user added thing I saw? I'm getting the turbo bug and the kit I saw doesn't include wrapping.
So, what's the word on wrapping the turbo and pipes?

On my 96 there is an aluminum cover with heat wrap bonded to it that gets bolted on and covers the turbo. Dosen't actually touch the turbo though. It acts like a heat shield. The downpipe has an extra piece of steel or stainless steel that is welded to the pipe. It dosen't wrap all the way around but is on the side that faces the dog house cover. It is also a shield for heat. Both are factory items.

I wrote before, I wrapped my entire exhaust from the turbo to the tailpipe including the muffler with Thermo-tec header wrao 2" tape, and the drone and loud noise is gone.
Just by wrapping the system it cut out 70% of the exhaust noise and the dreaded drone that was giving us a headache on the highway.
My van is very quiet now and with my Magnaflow 4" exhaust the EGT's are the same wrapped or un-wrapped. So we all wrapped out pipes. My mechanic pal Willie is the one who did it first on my van.
For you folks who do not have your exhaust wrapped yet, what are you waiting for?
it's the best money spent, under 150.00 made my van quiet.
the race folks tell me it will also add power because it keeps the downpipe warmer and thats why they wrap all the race cars headers with it.
Anyway, wrap your pipes, and no more Yikes.

Not only the Turbo, but the entire exhaust. The van is so different than the pickup trucks, on the trucks most of the system is under the bed and you cannot hear the drone part on the truck.
While the Van has the entire pipe and system under the cab or living/driving space and we can hear everything.
My exhaust system is somewhat quiet inside the van, but the system still roars out the 4/5" Tailpipe.
I have a new Fireproof Dynamat silver foil type material that I'M going to cover the inside doghouse over the original material. it's about 1/2" thick and looks good quality. I will take a photo of the box when I have it installed.

My rough estimate is that it would take close to 4 fifty foot rolls.

Four Boxes is just about right, 2 boxes for the clamp hardware. You need to buy them separately.
The instructions say to wrap the pipe with about 1/2" wrap as you go around the pipe. With four boxes you can wrap the pipe 1" lap and it will help with the soundproofing and will not hurt it. The race guys sometimes double wrap the headers with no problems.
if you wrap your pipes and the muffler, you will love it.
