on my 96 e350 7.3 powerstroke, does this come with a standard axle so you guys can tell me witch splines i got? i think it is full float since i got the 8 screws hub.
do i have to take out a axle to be shure what kinda splines it has or do some of you know what i have?
there should be #'s on one of the axle tubes, look for them. May have to scrape, use a wire brush. Then call someone who sells a lot of gears (randy's ring & pinion/4 wheel parts) and see if the can ID it. It's most likely a D60 full floater, but it could be a Dana 61. Hopefully not.....
i will check on my axle tomorov for numbers.
think it is full float axle, if it is then i can just unscrew the bolts at the end and pull it out?
what locker do you recomend for a e350 rwd. i had lock-right on a k5 i had worked fine, local dealer said that lock-right would not be a good choise for a e350 for street use, daily driving.
they could get a arb locker for me. i would rather buy a locker than is automatic, that i dont have to turn it on and off..
i use the car eweryday. just want a locker for more traction at snow and i can burn both tires just not 1 wheel
I run a Detroit in my van, which is a daily driver. You have to change your driving style a little, but I love it. I find that Detroit's work fine in longer wheelbase rigs. For someone that sees a lot of snow, it may not be a great choice, but imho, that depends on driving skill. I just like knowing that there are only two things that can happen. My rear axle is either locked, or it's blown up. Simple!!!!
I have nothing against ARB lockers. They work great.
I did tons of research last winter before rebuilding my traction lok. Lots of pros and cons with lock up rear ends for daily drivers on the highway.
If you've had experience with a lock up unit, then you know what you're getting in to.
The semi float is not a problem at all to pull the axles and change out the differential gears or install a lock up unit.......you just need a bearing puller and a press......you sure don't want to change the pinion position.....you want to put that differential back exactly where it was....and that means you need to have shims ready if needed.
You can even buy a lock up unit that will swap out perfectly with the existing trac-lok.
Dana has a lot of info available on the web so you shouldn't have to tear it apart to count splines before you have the parts ordered.

I believe that the change from 30 to 32 (D60) happened either for OR during 96. I had a LockRite in an 87 van and there was a heck of a lot of slop that put a lot of shock and wear and tear on the rest of the driveline. That causes a need for a lot of steering wheel movment unless you are going to drive like an old lady in the snow. If snow is the main issue then you WILL regret a LockRite. The same company makes a slightly more expensive and smoother model where you just change the spider gears also. They changed the name?????
Richmond also makes the Powertrax which alleges to be smoother/quieter. Not available for all applications though.
Glad I had my Detroit and Lockright this winter. Snow was the main issue. Wouldn't have gotten around or to work without them. That's why my E350 is getting one also.
