Water pump/Fan Procedure & Upper Hose Question.

Hey Folks:

Need to change water pump. Wasted tons of time trying to get the fan off the pump. Ran out of time and had to botton it all back up. Read the related posts for F series, but... What's the freak'n trick when it comes to a 2003 E-350 with a 7.3??

Also, the upper hose Napa sent me is about 3" too short. Right part, just too short. They don't list a different one (no one seems to). AC and single alt set up. If you've had this issue, please clue me in with the skinny. Had to zip tie the hose to keep it from rubbing agains the belt. Off to the Ford dealer I suppose for the correct length hose???

Thanks.

I've had to do 3 water pumps now and the last 2 were done by taking the radiator off and removing the fan and w/pump as an assy...put the fan shroud over the fan, pull the radiator out, then remove the shroud...I then dealt with getting the fan off on a bench vise..

much easier....

you will need a special wrench ...fan clutch wrench..it's a b***h to use but is a lot easier with the pump wedged in a vise....channel lock the water pump impeller and you are good to go...

Thanks. That certainly makes sense. Hickory! I have relatives (getting more distant as the years pass) in the Taylorsville area. Why good 'ol Great Grandma Montgomery made it well past the 100 mark (although she's not around now). Great area. Lived in Durham back in 7th grade (a long time ago). Thanks again for the radiator removal tip.

I replaced the water pump in my 2000 E350 7.3 PSD van this past January and the van's mileage was just under 100k. I did the same procedure as BD as far as removing the radiator and the shroud. Once I had the water pump off, I anchored the water pump impeller and then tapped the end of the flat of the fan nut with a brass punch and backed it right off. I just reversed the procedure to reinstall the fan being careful to not warp or damage the new water pump impeller.

While I had everything open and accessible, I replaced all the hoses, the serpentine belt, the belt idler pulley and the belt tensioner. I also cleaned and flushed the radiator.

My van has the single alternator setup and I bought my hoses from Carquest and they fit fine. If you buy aftermarket heater hoses, remember that you may have to purchase the quick connect and seals for them if they're not already part of the hose.

Yea, I was bummed that the heater hose Napa sent me did not have the quick connect and the belt was for a dual alt application (that one was my fault as I clicked the wrong one). Thinking I should replace the idler/tension pullies (I'm at 89k miles). Thanks.

I definitely go ahead and replace the tensioner and idler pulley. Mine were still running okay, but the one on the tensioner was showing some lubrication loss on the bearing seal so I'm pretty sure that its days were numbered. I just put them in the box and keep them in the truck in case I need one to get me home in an emergency.

Ditto .... you can replace the bearings in the pulleys too to have a good serviceable unit but only when the housing is in good alignment...they tend to "stretch"

Well this is a &#^%$!'d up day. Got the water pump off and lost my grip, damaging the ac condensor. To add insult to injury, I can't get that fan nut off for nothing. When facing the fan, is it reversed threads or regular? Thanks.

The only way I was able to get the fan nut off was to take it to my local goodyear and have them hit it with their air chisel.

Hi:

Can someone please tell me definatively which direction the fan nut turns? Half say one way, half say the other. Its a 2003 7.3 PSD. My rotator is so screwed up from banging on the nut that I can barely lift my arm now. I've ruined the fan and probably the clutch as well. I've bought the nut wrench and installed a 6" vise to hold the works. I've probably over tightened it but which way? I've got an air chisel but I've only got about one more shot at this. I'm stranded at home, so I've got to get it together. Thanks.
