E-Series VansTechnical discussion of topics related to vans powered by any of the Navistar engines. This covers a broad number of years, but there isn't enough demand to split it any further.
I have a 97 E450 that just started a weird problem. It will start fine and idle great while the CEL is lit up, as soon as the CEL goes out, (1-2 minutes) the engine will kill. If I run my high idle control at 1300 rpm, it will stumble, run up to about 1500 rpms to keep running and it sounds like the injectors are firing out of time. It started doing this a week ago, and I thought maybe the oil needed to be changed for the HPOP, but it didn't make any difference. I use the Walmart 15w-40 in it. Rotella was in it, but I was out this change. I don't really think it is the oil though.
If I take it out and stand on it, it will eventually work itself out of the problem. Would this be a sensor going bad? I am almost 99% sure it is an electrical problem since it will idle fine with the CEL and later when the engine warms up.
Thanks in advance for all your insights!!

I need to find another shop to check as my local shop can't seem to get his Snap-On unit to work on the van.... He tried all his different programs, but it wouldn't work.

The scanner should work.
Check fuse to see if OBD2 port has power.
I/P fuse panel. Fuse #23, 20amp. If your cigar lighter works it should be OK. They are the same fuse.
Numerous Glow Plug and harness issues. I knew that.
Overboost... Gee,
Too low exhaust pressure, Golly...
Finally one about the cam sensor. So we clear the codes. Start it back up, and since the engine is warm it doesn't act up for the 10 minutes we are talking.
Later driving home, (20 miles away) the damn thing coughs and freaks me out. Then drives fine. I bought a new sensor at Navistar. Does this sound like a cam sensor issue or could it have been a goofy code from a year ago like the others.

Could be the cps. Will not say 100% your problem.
Did you get the new so called better sensor (grey). (avail at ford)
Cost is about 15Bucks.
Van's are a PITA but
I would also look into that harness. Check the valve cover connections. From outside all the way to the inj and gp's. (loose, burns, ect).
Codes will selfclear after X-amount of passing test key cycles.
To be shure. Have it scanned again in a few day's to see what comes up.
Seems to only happen when motor is cold?
If so i would lean towards something in the EBPV system. (clogged sensor tube)

New CPS part #F7TZ-12K073-B (grey) Available at ford.
Refuse part# that ends with -A. Its the overpriced one (black).
If you need harness parts go to international they have rebuild kit/ends. (pins, connector, ect). Ford will try to sell you a harness. (stay away). I have heard one of the auto part chains have kit now also. I have not tried.
I would wait and rescan first.
While your under the hood. Look at the IDM connector (driveside fender) follow the harness towards the firewall. This location is common for a rubbout in a van.

A wire failure from rubbing.
As you allready know about the rear door rubout.

OK, thanks. But sounds like a good name for an inflatable runabout.
