E-Series Vans Technical discussion of topics related to vans powered by any of the Navistar engines. This covers a broad number of years, but there isn't enough demand to split it any further.

What engines fit in 84 E350?

Hey fellas,

My 1984 E350 6.9 Diesel was in the shop having the 4x4 hubs in the front replaced and the owner and I started talking about pulling and repairing/replacing the engine. He said that the earlier 7.3 non powerstroke engines would fit in the van and bolt right into the tranny with no probs.

Is he correct? Does this affect wiring harnesses or anything else I need to consider? I was under the assumption that I needed to replace with another 6.9. The 7.3's seem a bit easier to find than the 6.9's so I am crossing my fingers.

Any other engines I can consider or other info is appreciated.

Thanks Jason

Re: What engines fit in 84 E350?

The 7.3 NA is the same block, bolts right in. I'm assuming in a van you have an automatic, I recommend finding an auto 7.3 with the flex plate out of another van, as some of the fuel injector lines and the fuel filter location are different on the pickup. Glow plugs, controller, and wiring harness may or may not be different, depending on the year.

The vans used the same body/chassis from 74-91, so an engine up to 91 would go in the easiest. The later engines might have some different brackets, etc for the different body/chassis.
