E-Series VansTechnical discussion of topics related to vans powered by any of the Navistar engines. This covers a broad number of years, but there isn't enough demand to split it any further.
I've finally got my vacuum gauges for my air and fuel systems installed and lines run. My decision is where to tap the intake system for the air restriction gauge. I will be tapping it using THIS which is the fitting on the lower right with the blue line on it. I want to tap intake system as close to the outlet of the airbox as possible so my two choices are the actual plastic air box or the rubber intake tube. I'm leaning towards the rubber intake tube just after the band clamp HERE. This would allow me to do things like air filter changes, fuel filter changes w/o removing the tap. However the tap I'll be using is a QD type DOT rated for brake systems to 10,000psi so disconnecting is really a non issue. Also, it seems the rubber tube will seal better even tho the bulkhead fitting does have o-rings on each side.
Are you going to remove the factory air restriction indicator?
If so, this would be a good location.
Would installing it as close to the filter give you the best reading? If you installed the probe in the housing that connects the intake hose and the turbo inlet elbow you would never have to touch it when doing any maintainence.
What I ended up doing is installing it in the rubber section of the intake tube just after the band clamp at the outlet of the airbox. Evidently at least on the F-series the air intake systems are spec'd for a maxiumum air restriction of 25inH2O at the outlet of the filter box so I wanted to get it as close to that position as possible. I left my filter minder alone which has never moved since I had the Van. Since the vacuum is sensitive to location, I wanted to be consistent with the information I had. I hated to put a hole in my air system, but in this case there just isn't any way around it for where I felt I needed to T into the system.

WOW!!!
25in of vac max.
If the factory indicator was to go into restrict mode you would probably have to reach down the intake hose to retrieve you air filters.

Bill you may have missed it, but that's 25inH20 and not 25inHg vacuum which is around 1.8inHg on the typical vacuum gauges that we're all used to seeing and using on automobiles. It takes a special gauge to read these extremely low vacuums.
