E-Series VansTechnical discussion of topics related to vans powered by any of the Navistar engines. This covers a broad number of years, but there isn't enough demand to split it any further.
Will the battery boxes on newer style fit the OBS frame? Anyone done this to free up room in engine compartment? What did you do with wiring, do you need the harness from donor vehicle? I would really like to get them under the van if possible.
Thanks
I moved both my batteries inside. Used #2/0 welding cable to jumper them together, and #4/0 to go directly to the starter (pos & neg). I wanted to free up space under the hood for an air intake, and the battery underneath was hard to get at plus the terminals got really corroded and dirty because of all the road splash and grime.
I left the underhood battery cables intact for now so I have an easy jump-start point and didn't mess with alt. and GP wires.

Thanks for the input. Do you have a cargo van? I really don't want to put batteries inside with all the seats. Do you know if the new vans with the battery trays under the van are a sealed box or are they just exposed? Really want to free up the space.
Thanks, Dann
My '97 E350 had the frame mounted battery. Its a metal 'bucket' with a cheap ABS plastic hat. Mud and water get in there anyways. Here's a pic I found in the gallery: Battery Box - TheDieselStop.Com Photo Hosting
My van is a bus-body conversion, and now its an Electrician's service van. I took most of the seats out when I installed shelves. I found room under the one remaining double-seat for both batteries. I used the stock-type under hood trays screwed to the floor because the white nylon-material battery boxes don't come in a Group 65 size.

I'm thinking about just getting the newer style battery frame that is mounted under the frame and hopefully that will do it. Then I have the wiring to contend with. Maybe I can buy the harness to go with it. What do you think?
I have a 2007 E350 with the factory frame-mounted auxilliary battery under the passenger side of the rig. It is NOT sealed at all - it needs to be vented, and there is just a plastic lid over the battery box and big holes for the cables to run through. I will be installing additional protection to keep water/dirt away from the battery.
If it will help, I can photograph the factory installation for your. Let me know.
