Who's mounted a bypass filter on a van???

(Besides you, Larry...)

Has anyone mounted an oil bypass filter on their van? I'd like to know where you mounted it and connected it...

Thanks, Matt

Re: Who's mounted a bypass filter on a van???

Here are parts of some of one PM that I sent Matt that describes my bypass install:

HERE is a pic of the supply side fitting. Sorry for the crud on the fitting, but as I said these were fairly unique fittings with very specific instructions on how to install. Other systems might work, but you sure don't want this to fail or you're going to loose a lot of oil. HERE is a pic of where I mounted mine. This location is forward of the battery box and I ran the return up the frame and into the engine compartment and then using the Amsoil swivel oil cap return fitting installed the return into the passenger side valve cover since there is a cap already on that side. If you look in THIS PICTURE you can see my oil return line which is in the black wire loom on the left between the Map sensor and the fuel drain and oil dipstick. It comes up and loops over and then back down to the passenger side valve cover.

I used the single element Amsoil bypass running the BE100 element and mounted the head in two existing holes in the frame. In addtion to what was in the kit I had to order the oil filler swivel fitting and 8' of extra hose. I also put a sampling valve in from Amsoil on the head, but haven't used it and will take it out when I get a chance. Finally if you look at the picture of the actual filter I installed a rock shield just in front of the filter for protection and it's been on for over 20K miles and about 16mos w/o any issues/damage.

When I made up the return in the cap in the passenger side valve cover, I bought a replacement cap and saved my original and I can fairly eaisly disconnect the bypass return, put a section of line on it and after putting the original cap back on check for fiter flow by running the return into the oil filler tube. Of course you can alway feel the filter and it hot it's still flowing. I change my element around 16K to 20K miles.

Larry

Re: Who's mounted a bypass filter on a van???

Thanks... I kinda figured I'd be blazing a new trail here. My goal is to mount my Amsoil Dual-Guard (dual BE 110s mounted horizontally) on the driver's side on a custom fabricated mount (took off my old van) and hooked up to the ports near the oil cooler. But certain "stuff" needs to be "rearranged" first -- got a hold of the tech who had done a lot of the other mods to lend a hand...

Re: Who's mounted a bypass filter on a van???

-I have a 94 E350 N/A 7.3, and it doesn't have a Quigley 4x4 on it either, so you'll probably not necessarily be able to mount yours where I did mine. That said, I mounted an Amsoil dual remote filter mount on the frame rail, under the drivers seat. That gives me my full flow and bypass filters in one location. However I do like the idea of using the double bypass filter mount as it would give you twice the bypass filter area.
-On another note, I use the BE-110 bypass filters, one time went I over something a little taller than I thought, and ended up with the mount tweaked a little. If you're going to use that Quigley for any off-roading I'd definitely either mount it so that it wasn't too low, or put a guard around it to prevent any sudden stresses on the filters or hoses!! That could prevent a sudden loss of oil pressure!!!

Re: Who's mounted a bypass filter on a van???

Horizontal or vertical? And is that on the inside or outside of the frame? (I think outside...) And if so, where did you run your hoses -- in between the frame and body? Was there enough room? Seems kinda tight up front.... Much better to the rear but too far away.

Re: Who's mounted a bypass filter on a van???

msnunes
Hook in here. The line on the left, (going into the oil filter housing), is the supply side to your bypass filter and the line on the right is the return (dumps into the oil pan). Easy. Where you mount your filter .... well, your on your own there, I have a pick-up.

Re: Who's mounted a bypass filter on a van???

Thanks, but not that easy.... Us vanners don't have the same oil cooler as the F-series - don't know why - we can't get the supply from there. We CAN get it from another port in the general area, though... and the return is the same.

My biggest concern is getting the lines between the frame and body underneath the driver's door, where I want it mounted. Doesn't appear to be much room...

Re: Who's mounted a bypass filter on a van???

I tell you what. Try to help a guy out. Take a simple little project like a by-pass filter install and you just have to make it difficult, don't you. You darn Van guys just have to be different. Are all you van guys related to Larry M or what? Or, maybe its, all of you ARE,... Larry M. ROTFLOL First the "Black Hole" theory and now you've found out there is really only one Vanner on this site posting under 25 alias . FWIW our alternator is on the wrong side, we have two air cleaner elements, only have one battery in the engine compartment, our coolant reservoir is on the driver's side firewall, changing our fuel filters is no 10 minute job, in addition to the no intercooler/wastegate thing.
