E-Series Vans Technical discussion of topics related to vans powered by any of the Navistar engines. This covers a broad number of years, but there isn't enough demand to split it any further.

Why is the 7.3 diesel van motor different than the 7.3 diesel truck motor?

Why is the 7.3 diesel van motor different than the 7.3 truck motor?

Why aren't they the same motor in design?

Is it because there is less space in the van motor compartment?

Can anyone discuss this point please?

Thankyou

From what i can tell they are the same engine. The only reason there are different numbers for the engine ratings is because of the less space which caused them to not put a waste gate or intercooler on the power stroke vans. I believe that's the only difference.

Re: Why is the 7.3 diesel van motor different than the 7.3 diesel truck motor?

What is a waste gate and intercooler and what do they do, ie what purpose do they serve?

Why doesn't ford make the engine cover bigger thereby allowing an intercooler and wastegate and making it easier to work on the motors?

A waste gate lets off excess pressure from the exhaust side on the turbo, i think. It keeps the turbo from getting excessivly hot and what not. Like, when too much exhaust is being produced the waste gate opens up and lets some exhaust out, allowing the turbo to not get as much. An intercooler goes before the turbo on the compression side, i believe it takes in air and cools it basically so when it jams the air into the engine the air will be cooler. Cooler air is easier to squeeze, so it can squeeze more air into the cylinders.

I'm not sure why they don't just make the engine cover bigger and fit everything in. I guess they just had to make compromises and make the engine cover "yay" big and leave off certain components that they thought weren't nessecary.

Another factor which might have something to do with it is that vans aren't really as popular as the F-series trucks so maybe they just decided that designing all this stuff in wouldn't really be worth their time. I mean, if they really wanted to put an intercooler and wastegate on the vans they could. But seein vans are mostly work trucks and what not they probably just decided to concentrate their time on the F-series.

If you take the time and read like all the posts in the first 10 to 20 pages in this forum that has topics on which you have questions on about 90% of your recent questions might be answered since a lot of this has been discussed already. Also a visit to a Ford dealer to see how the Vans are basically constructed might help in understanding why the intercooler is a front end not an engine cover issue since it sets in front of the engine and not at the rear.
