Why I love my diesel!

Took a little trip to visit my family in Iowa. 4518 miles for 2 weeks.

Average mpg: 17.501 Not bad for a 9700# 4wd van.

And the power at the top of Monarch Pass (11,312') felt the same as at sea level. Maybe the turbo had to work harder, but the power felt the same to me. And I remember severe loss of power from gas engined campers.

Is your solar panel a sportmobile option?

Does it power a trickle charger?

Re: Why I love my diesel!

Turbos help engines work better at high altitude.

I flew seaplanes before and the non-turbo has a lower limit "ceiling level" than the turbo'ed emgine. The turbo gave the plane a 25,000 ft. limit vs. the 16,000 on a non-turbo.

turbo diesel engines are killer, my van smokes any van on the road, unless it's one of you guy's 8-)

We had the van built with the 'Solar Prep' option. That is, the solar controller, wiring and no panel. Later I installed a 125W panel. And it will keep all the batteries charge.

On our van, SMB installed a Sure Power 1314 battery isolator/charger module(http://www.surepower.com/separator.html Click on printable brochure for specs). With this module, both battery systems are isolated, yet when either system is charged up(13.2-13.4V), it will switch over and charge the other set of batteries. So, when the solar system charges the camper batteries, it will connect to the starting batteries and charge them also. Or, when driving, when the starting batteries are charged, it will charge the camper batteries.
