Blown engine 2011 f-250 89,000 miles

So as I am driving down I-55 my engine starts to lose all power and make a knocking noise. I call Ford roadside assistance and they tell me that the warranty only covers one tow under them so I am stuck on the side of the highway with my trailer due to an already blown transmission which gave out just under warranty as well (thank god). The service advisor did allow me to store the trailer at the dealership and my truck and trailer have now been stranded 1,200 miles away from home since December 19. I have been told that the engine had some glow plug issues and that the only fix was to replace the small block. I have not been given any real explanation on what happened all I know is that the truck managed to keep me warm idling outside the dealership until they opened the next morning. It was running very rich and had no power. I've heard of valve issues on these engines but haven't really heard of any glow plug issues that require the whole block changed. Any info would be appreciated

Tip of glow plug let loose. Went on top of piston then proceded to destroy it and the cylinder. But I would imagine it got the head and valves as well.

Should I worry about the turbo or anything else down the road? I'm sure they will re use as much ass possible but what else could be affected by something like this?

This is strange to be reading about this in a new truck. There are a couple of us on the 6.0 part of the site that this happened to and I think they were in #5 cylinder. Mine was #5, it is an 03 and got a newer short block etc. to the tune of $12,000. In my case a glow plug tip broke off and took out the cylinder wall. The repair shop speculated about excessive cylinder pressure for the failure. Good luck with yours.

The exh valve head cracking issue in the larger cab & chassis trucks is fairly well known, but this is the first I've heard of a GP causing a problem, or a possible valve problem in a P/U engine.

Until the dealer gets the heads off the engine you really won't know for sure what the problem is. Seems odd that it idled all night at the dealership. It's really not possible for a diesel engine to "Run Rich", so if it was smoking it was probably from oil getting past the piston into the combustion chamber, or maybe compression leaking past a valve that wasn't sealing.

Well the truck was fully assembled today with its new motor and on the last test run my truck loses full power again the tech starts trouble shooting and finds that the EGR valve if failing. Luckily they will have one on Monday and try to get it running again. Problem is I'm 1,200 miles away and it's not easy to plan a trip back with all these issues. Good thing is they caught this before I was driving back to Texas

Why? The people that have issues with this truck represent <1% of the total trucks sold. (Statistic estimated) Realistically anything that is designed and built by humans is prone to breakdowns.

i agree...the in warranty breakdowns arent what scare me its the chance of hpfp letting go after warranty and taking everything with it.ive read of 16,000 repair bills on the 6.4s......im sure the 6.7s will be close to that.

You may as well worry about the HPFP while it's still in warranty. Ford's not covering them if they determine water in fuel is the cause for failure....
