I just got my first DEF refill at my dealer on Friday. I didn't pay because I had the Ford coupon for my first refill free, and my invoice didn't say how much the DEF/labor would have been if I had paid.
I was just looking, and found out that my local Pilot station actually has a DEF pump for $2.999 a gallon. I feel like this is probably cheaper than buying jugs of it, and it would be more convenient than scheduling an appointment with my dealer or trying to do it myself and probably spilling it everywhere.
The station isn't too far, maybe 15 miles, so I may end up just going to check it out myself, but I was wondering if anyone else had used a DEF pump yet?
I know that the semis that the pumps are intended for probably hold much more DEF than we do, so I wasn't sure if I needed to worry about the nozzle not fitting in our DEF intake or if the flow rate is going to be too high and send a geyser of DEF shooting back at me.
Like I said, I'm good for now but will check it out next time I need DEF and was just wondering if anyone had any experience with a DEF pump at a station yet.
I could never find a gas station with a DEF pump... I am interested as well. I see you are on Sarasota, where is this pilot station?
It is an interesting experience the first time you fill the DEF tank by yourself. Ford didn't give me a spout, luckily I had a funnel, which overflowed. Second time I had a leaking spout where I purchased DEF at a pilot station in a 2.5 gal jug. I would LOVE to just pump it in from a station pump. $2.99 a gal is WAY WAY WAY cheaper than Ford and 1/2 price of the 2.5 gal jug.
I actually go to Elon University up here in North Carolina, so the Pilot station local to here is the one that has the DEF.
I had the dealer refill my DEF on Friday but they at first thought that the coupon only got 2.5 gallons free so that's all they put in. Oddly enough, 2.5 gallons and I still got in the truck and it said I was under half full. Went back in and they realized the mistake and brought out another jug and had one of the guys fill it. It took ALMOST the 2.5 gallons, almost being key because the poor guy covered himself in DEF and spilled it all over the truck right under the intake which I was a little worried about but it seems to have washed out fine. It was probably his first time filling a DEF tank too, but it didn't exactly inspire much confidence in doing it myself. I'd definitely prefer to just pull up to a pump.
Here's the list of all the Pilot stations that have DEF pumps.
When you fill your own DEF from a jug, get one of the spouts from Ford.
They fit tight into the intake and they will prevent splash back. I bought my first gallon from Ford, which came with the spout. The rest of the DEF I bought at NAPA for 1/2 the price as Ford, and just reused the spout. The product is the same, just a different label.

The closest Pilot to me with DEF is in Ft. Pierce - I 'll make a note of it, but it is too far for a trip just to get DEF.
I bet that service guy will be a little more careful the next time he adds DEF to a truck. That stuff itches like crazy and probably isn't all that good for your skin. I haven't looked up the MSDS on it yet, but I know about the itching from personal expereince. The hazmat book I have it too old, it doesn't list DEF.
That is about what I thought and have experienced with DEF. Looks like when you fill it, you should be wearing gloves and goggles. Although read the MSDS on gasoline and it is more dangerous than DEF and I haven't seen too many people wearing gloves when filling their gas tanks.
The drop I tasted was a non-event. None of the side-effects the document warned.

I was on vacation thru TX,NM,AZ,NV,UT and Co and when I stop for fuel at the truck station I ask for DEF 90% of the clerk don't know what that.None have it at the pump some have in the 2.5 gal. jar after I found by myself.
Thanks for the heads up on the Pilot stations. There is one near me. I'll check it out.
The cheapest I have been able to find is the 2 1/2 gallon jugs for $13.12.

Yes, a little drop of DEF on my finger and I'm still alive and kicking. Watch the video for all the gory details.
