Changed my fuel filters and oil. I primed it without the drain plug on the frame rail fuel filter... tried starting.. started but died instantly. Tired again no start at all. Found out I forgot the plug, put it in. Filled the filter under the hood with fuel to hope it would help. No start. Whenever I prime the fuel, the drain plug pours out.. plug is all the way twisted in. What am I doing wrong... help!
The owner's manual says to do 6 keys turns to clear the air from the fuel system after changing the filter.
Purging air from the fuel system
Turn the ignition key to on for 30 seconds,
then turn it to off. Do this six times in a row
to purge any trapped air from the fuel
system.
After filter service, a no start or rough
running engine may indicate that air is
entering the system through the filter bowl
seal or drain. Make sure the drain is tight
and you tightened the filter bowl to the
mechanical stop.

In addition to Larry's information, I also change the filters one at a time and start the engine between the changes. I typically change the rear (under the truck) filter first, perform the key on/off sequence and then start the truck and let it run for about 1 minute. I then change the engine filter, then repeat the key on/off process and start the engine again. Never had a problem doing it this way.
Sounds like The O ring on your drain plug is missing, installed incorrectly or is defective. Fuel should not come out at all if you have it closed . If you remedy that problem then all you have to do is prime the fuel system in the way the manual. explains and it should start.
What CascadeF250 said and I have never removed the plug on the lower filter housing, just turn it out until it's open. More than likely you pinched the o-ring on the plug.
So turns out the little end piece fell off the drain plug and went missing. I thought I found it and put it back on... but I don't think the piece I found was for it. It plugged the drain so no fuel coming out.
I got the truck running right after, finally I could hear fuel going thru the lines at the engine bay filter. Truck runs! Let it run for 10 min or so. Park it outside turn it off. I go to leave work and start truck. I look under at frame rail filter to make sure it's still not leaking. All good. Immediately I realize I am DUMPING fuel under my engine..... my right disconnect line going to the filter wasn't on all the way.
Jump in shut truck off! Dash is saying low fuel pressure.. I think. I turned that thing off so quick I barely had time to read it. So I hook line back up. Prime 4ish times starts fine and runs, no leaks. Drove 20 miles notice my check engine light is on. I stopped to get fuel was 25 till E. Leave and light is gone. Sweet! Still I went to auto store down road and used a scanner on it to double check.
I get codes P0087 - fuel rail / system pressure too low
P2291 - injector control pressure to low - engine cranking
On my way home when I left work i noticed the engine was lacking. The turbo was trying way harder then it ever does. Engine is not quiet and sounds like it's running rough. Just had **** for power. So what now. ??*♂
The only thing that should have come off your filter drain plug would be the small O ring that seals it. If it was a small O ring you found and installed in the right place on the plug you could be ok there. I take my drain plug out occasionally to clean it and lube it with diesel before reinstalling . You could still be getting air in your fuel system but at this point I would probably take it to a dealer before you damage the expensive fuel system these trucks have. I once had a fuel line blow off on the engine filter after 10,000 miles at the summit of The North Cascade Pass in Washington State. Not good! Good luck with your problem.
So now if I prime it, the first prime on each start up the filter under hood makes a whining noise.
Edit: noise is doing it over and over again from under hood pump I think.
The one on fuel rail just makes a noise each time for the 30 seconds it's on.
Considering the cost to replace the HPFP and associated systems, you should probably take it to the dealer for a diagnosis before something serious happens.
There is a small hole into the plug housing. Nothing is getting from the plug to the filter. If it's a very tiny part that fits through the hole it will be in the housing. It's not going anywhere.
The piece is the black end of the drain plug. It fit kind of. I have to order a new drain plug no where up here has on in stock. The end I put on atleast stopped the drain port. Before I wasn't even getting any fuel pressure to my engine.
Maybe you should just get a whole new filter housing and plug. I bought one on eBay and it wasn't very expensive. Amazon might have them also. You could keep your old one for a spare. My 2011 also whined(especially when cold) at first start up always. My 2016 does not. Hope you have a spare vehicle to drive since it's so hard for you to get parts.
Ordered new drain plug. Gonna be a week/ cross my fingers it holds till then.
After driving it for 2 days now. I still feel like the motor is making a different sound when accelerating.. I keep telling myself I'm over thinking it. My mpg is now running about 1 above normal which blows my mind even more. Maybe I blame the different engine noise on the T6 rotella I put in it.
Either way I'm taking it to dealer for diagnosing. I have a 2 year warranty should probably take advantage. What's normal fuel pressure suppose to be at on these engines.
There is a thick square cut rubber o-ring on the tip of the yellow drain plug. That is what seals the water drain orifice. It is a good practice when servicing the primary filter to remove the drain on the bench and clean the cap then coat the plug liberally with clean engine oil and screw it in and back out a couple of times to lube it all up. The drain will work much smoother and the seal won't sick in the cap. HTH
Once the main part of the bowl drains, it will start to siphon from the tank. There's only about pint of fuel in the filter housing.
BTW, make make sure the filter lines upon the three tabs. There is a wrong way to install the filter (don't ask me how I know). Take note of the drain valve position and make sure the cap screws back on all the way to that position.
