Angry If you have bucking, surging or shuddering - you NEED to read this

If you have experienced bucking, surging, shift flares, rough shifts, shuddering and an unresponsive throttle, I'm trying to learn more:

Click here to complete a simple survey about your truck problems:https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/...lZbkE6MQ#gid=0

If you need to update your submission at a later date, just send me a PM.

Click here to review the responses: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/...kE&output=html

Here are three videos of a truck bucking, shuddering, shaking and making a strange noise. They may help you explain your problem to your dealer:

Video 1: 2011 Ford Super Duty Problems (1 of 3) - YouTube
Video 2: 2011 Ford Super Duty Problems (2 of 3) - YouTube
Video 3: 2011 Ford Super Duty Problems (3 of 3) - YouTube (this is the longest and best video)

I most recently updated this thread on November 25, 2012 here: If you have a shudder, shift flares, unresponsive throttle - you NEED to read this

I don't think either that they know or can do anything to fix these transmission issues.

Edit..I read here at DStop someone got a new improved trans from the 2012 line so we may be screwed.

shudder, shift flares

Shuddering/knocking "old diesel" noise/dead throttle. Happens during regen at any speed but usually when approaching a hill under a load. Truck will start to shudder and knock, seems like there is a dead spot. Let off on pedal to stop the knocking, then stomp on it and its fine til the next time.
Build date: 12/10
4x4 Yes
F350
Miles on truck 8000
Selling dealer Jack Madden Ford, Norwood Mass.
Servicing dealer Flood Ford, East Greenwich, RI

3 trips to dealer, unable to reproduce problem, no codes thrown.
Tech drove over an hour with me, but since it wasn't in regen we could not duplicate. Hooked to computer but no codes. Passed KOER code P1249, P2457, whatever that is. Checked eec, vac lines and wastegate held vacuum.
Changed both fuel filters just in case but still happens.

Transmission shifts sometimes harsh definately not as smooth as my allison but so far no real flares yet.

Hope someone figures out the issue.

Model year 2011
Build date 10/10
4x4
Selling and servicing dealer Gene Evans Ford
Rough shifts, doesn't engage reverse, down shifts to the wrong gear, trans squeaks in 1st and reverse,................
It has had all the TSB's done that are our there for the symptoms. So far the "lugging",shuddering noise seems to be gone.
I am waiting on fords "no-customer" service/we are sorry for the problems/take it back to the dealer for weeks on end rep to call me!!!Have to have a little humor dealing with them.
I know this won't happen, but I wish ford would hire some designers and engineers from mercedes. My brother-in-law purchased there biggest SUV from them with there bluets diesel engine in it and the thing is flawless. It also gets 20 mpg towing our 5000K boat up the mountains. It has smooth shifting, puts like a kitten and for a 6 cly really kicks butt.

newbie

Hey guys I am a newbie on this forum but have been following all of these posts regarding tranny problems. I am not in the automotive field and do not drive a ford but feel your pain and wanted to add what little info I have. I had very similar problems in a different truck. It was an 07 gmc sierra with the 6l80e automatic. Flare and/or harsh shifts, transmission shuddering, etc. You can reference the gm directive via #PIP4395C. It was caused by leaking 1-2-3-4 and 3-5-R clutch fluid seal rings. Which leads me to believe at least some of your problems are related to the clutch packs? It stated:

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:
Some customers may comment on a flare or harsh 2-3 shift.

Recommendation/Instructions:
This condition may be caused by leaking 1-2-3-4 and 3-5-R clutch fluid seal rings(230 in SI document 1698360). The following conditions are indications that the fluid seal rings may be leaking:

-Delayed/extended or delayed with harsh feel initial Park to Drive and/or Reverse to Drive shifts, that are more likely to occur when the transmission temperature is below approximately 40 degrees C(104 degrees F).

-Harsh or flaring 2-3 shifts that are more likely to occur when the transmission fluid temperature is in the approximately 0 degree C (32 degree F) to 40 degree C (104 degree F) temperature range, but can be present at any temperature.

-Harsh 2-3 shifts that are more likely to occur at less than 50% throttle position.

-Vehicles built in the January through August, 2007 time frame are more likely to have leaking fluid seal rings.

Important: When inspecting the 1-2-3-4 and 3-5-R clutch fluid seal rings (230) there probably will not be visible signs that the seal rings are damaged.

If any of the conditions above describe the flare/harsh 2-3 shift condition replace the 1-2-3-4 and 3-5-R clutch fluid seal rings (230).

Do not replace the valve body, TCM or fluid pump cover assemble.

Important Note: The 1-2-3-4 and 3-5-R clutch fluid seal rings (230) must be properly oriented when they are installed. Incorrect installation could lead to fluid leakage and shift concerns. Refer to SI document 2178811 for installation directions.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step.

It sounds like Ford has not given you any ideas as to the reason the trans are not properly working. This could be an area of interest, leaky clutch fluid seal rings, losing fluid pressure, etc. GM had the above issue in the very beginning with their new 6 speed but promptly fixed it. Good luck to all.

2011 F350 SRW 4x4
Build 1/11
approx 11k miles
Selling Dealer: Dale Jarrett Ford
Servicing Dealer: Boone Ford (Boone, NC)

Experiencing:
delayed Park to Drive shift,
Flares,
Shuddering (varying in severity),
Lugging at low rpm (can also hear almost like metal shaking if that makes sense) but won't downshift unless I press pedal hard. Seems to happen mostly when rounding an uphill turn.

Truck spent 2 days at dealership. They were unable to replicate symptoms so no action taken. In their defense, the dealership seemed to do a good job of trying to replicate the problem and did not question that I was experiencing the problems. I chose to take the truck back after 2 days as I need it for work.

A small rant but this is my first Ford (after 3 Dodges and a Toyota truck) and I am not sure that I am impressed for a truck that stickers over $60k.

Transmission shudders, surges, shakes, and delays shifts.

Stock shocks and steering stabilizer are all crap and are completely shot already (@11k) and I live on paved roads.

Clipped in interior panels rattle like my 1984 lifted truck did. I keep having to tighten and adjust panels to alleviate rattles and squeaking.

The factory stereo has some pretty sad speakers for the upgraded, good-as-it-gets stereo offering (all 3 Dodges and the Toyota were better as well as my wife's Tahoe).

The factory Michelin tires are almost worn out and they have worn evenly with regular rotation so no alignment issues; just a rubber compound that is too soft for the truck if you live in the mountains (read: lots of turns and stop and go).

And, at 11k miles, I have to have my "coolant additive" checked and topped at the expense of my time and money.

Surprisingly, for the list, I do like the truck. Looks great, comfortable seats, plenty of power ... Rant over

I'm very interested to know the % of people with these problems. I and at least a dozen others I know in my immediate area have never experienced ANY of these problems.
Also never had a tenth of the problems with my 6.0 that people complain about and I still have it as well and my step-son drives it daily.

My only gripe is the factory speakers could be better, at higher volume it sounds decent, just low to medium volume is really lacking.
Actually, people that don't get on forums and drive the drive are constantly saying they wish they had that transmission in their trucks.

For those having a shifting issue,

I can help by sending your information to the Customer Service Manager in your region to arrange for you to be contacted. For me to do this, please send a PM with your VIN, contact information, dealer name/state, and approximate mileage.

Cory

My dealer has been VERY good to work with. I don't wish to go behind their back in any way at this point as they seem to be doing all they can to help me. Cory has offered his assistance, but at this point, I want to give them the benefit of the doubt and not have to have someone else calling them to try to push things along.

I also have driven two other 2011 trucks basically identical to mine that drive like a dream. No problems at all.
