Mobil Delvac 1 ESP "CJ-4" - OK? or Not?

Hello. Like many of you, I have been scrambling to find oil for my next oil change in my 2011 6.7l. No one here in my part of GA has the older Rotella T6 that is not CK-4. I went to the parts store yesterday and found the Mobil Delvac 1 ESP that says API CJ-4 on the front of the bottle. Mobil's website shows two formulations and the picture of the newest CK-4 bottle has "CK-4" written on the front. I believe I bought the older stuff that is still CJ-4.

I have heard that Rotella is still packaging the CK-4 in the old CJ-4 bottles.

Sooo, my question is: Should I be worried that the Mobil Delvac bottles that purchased that say "CJ-4" on the front still have the newer CK-4 blend? Below is a picture from the Mobil website that shows the bottles and they have either "CJ-4" or "CK-4 written on them.

Any feedback would be appreciated before I go dumping this stuff into the truck. Thanks!

Its a good question. I have not read similar instances with Delvac-1 bottles labeled CJ-4 being proven to have CK-4 contents through Oil Analysis but I haven't read anything to confirm that only CJ-4 oil is found in CJ-4 bottles either.

Mobil is probably the only source to answer this question with authority.

Delvac-1 is such a superior grade oil that its one of the few instances I would personally take the risk.

How much do you pay for 1-gallon?

I just got off the phone with Mobil and the tech referred me to a level 2 oil tech. He stated that the newer blends of CK-4 would be clearly marked and they don't package CK-4 blend into bottle that are not marked as such. We will see. He ran the codes from the bottle in an attempt to track it down for sure. That didn't yield anything. I feel confident that it is older stock and it can be used.

I appreciate it ArcticDriver your opinion. I paid $29.99 a gallon for the bottles. It's time for an oil change and I have only used Rotella T6 before, so I wanted to stay with the synthetics and there are not a lot of options around here for full synthetic diesel oil. Oh well. I will run it and how she does.

According to Shell, the CJ-4 might actually be CK-4. I talked to a Shell rep and that is what they told me.

Would you really expect them to tell you a definitive answer?
That would make them liable.
Of course they are going to say "might".......

As Shell introduced the new CK-4 regionally throughout the US it was probably quite difficult for even Shell personnel to know which CJ-4 bottles on store shelves contained CJ-4 or CK-4 oil; but there is actually no liability issue since CK-4 is considered a "superior" or "improved" product. The only time a mislabeled product results in "liability" or "false advertising", etc is when an inferior product is passed off as "superior".

By all account except Ford, every other engine and vehicle manufacturer considers CK-4 oil products to be "new & improved" and there are countless experts who could provide test results to support that claim.

Its such an interesting dilemma since Ford is the only manufacturer to make a stink and they waited until the very last minute to do so...after CK-4 was on the shelves. Ford really dropped the ball here IMO.

Or Ford is simply trying to boost sales of its Motorcraft labeled oil while being able to handily deny warranty claims as a customer used a non-accepted oil.

Except there is no Motorcraft oil that meets CK-4 or the new Ford WSS-M2C171-F1 specification that I have seen anywhere--I am sure it will appear at some point.

Right, but isn't Ford claiming that CK-4 doesn't meet their -E or -E1 spec? As a result we are supposed to avoid using CK-4 spec oil. That's been my takeaway from this.

Correct; but currently Ford does not have an oil that meets their new WSS-M2C171-F1 specification either so as 6.7L Powerstroke owners who have a warranty in effect, we are left to stocking up on existing CJ-4 oil until:

1) Ford concedes that CK-4 oil will not destroy their engines due to premature wear (as they currently say it will).

OR

2) The major oil OEMs develop an oil that meets the WSS-M2C171-F1 specification and is accepted by Ford.

For any of you near Blaine's Farm & Fleet (IL, IN & WI) or the Farm Supply Stores in other parts of US who run 15W-40 synthetic blend...the Mystik JT-8 is on sale for $50 for a 5-gallon bucket in CJ-4.

This Mystik has always received excellent reviews on BITOG for its additive package and TBN for HD diesel engines.

I am wondering if this sale is an attempt to clear out CJ-4 supplies?
