Stop Safely Now message directly after regeneration process starts

So I was driving to work at about 6:00 AM this morning and as I was exiting the freeway, my regen message popped up and then shortly after, maybe 2 miles, I got a Stop Safely Now message. I was coming up to a red light and planned to pull over after the light but I did not even make it to the intersection. Just before I reached the intersection, my truck turned itself off still displaying this message.

I called Ford roadside assistance and had my truck towed to the dealership where I purchased it and have it regularly serviced and am currently waiting to find out what is wrong.

I have a feeling this is an EGT sensor and my truck is now at 52,000 miles which means I am 2,000 miles past the emissions warranty. It would figure that the warranty would have just expired. If this is the issue though and since my truck is Ford dealer serviced, I am going to raise hell if they do not cover it under warranty.

Any other reports of these EGT sensors going bad? My truck is a 2011 F250. I really did not want to do it, but maybe this issue will give me a reason dump the exhaust emissions and tune the truck. It does not need the extra power or economy, but if the emissions are going to cause reliability issues, then I may just get rid of them.

I will keep you all updated when I hear from the dealer.

We had the same issue with a 6.4 powered f350 at work. It ended up being the rear most egt sensor went out. Got it towed to the dealership and it was fixed in 10 mins.

I just had mine towed in last night with the exact same problem.

I had driven it and parked. Half hour later jumped in it and backed up, the engine quit and the 'stop safely' light came on.

I let it sit for an hour, got back in and restarted, it quit after 5 miles on the interstate and had to be towed in. Nice feeling to be driving and lose all power.

2012 with 7500 miles. ***? For $60k this is what you get? I had 57k on my '09 and it never was in the shop. EVER.

Plus this thing jumps into neutral after I let my foot off the gas on occasion and then 'hard jumps' back in to gear.

I ALMOST went GMC but have had about 15 Super Dutys so remained loyal. Too much technology in my opinion.

E-mail me if you find out why yours quit. patrick@activethunderboats.com

query the diesel tech. On the 6.4 there is a jumper on the passenger battery that you can disconnect and ground and then it will start.

make darn sure you know that is the issue though.

I just got a call from the dealer. It looks like it is both a knock sensor and an EGT sensor and the service guy says that neither are covered under warranty as I have 52,000 miles on the truck and the warranty on both of these parts expired with the 36k mile bumper to bumper.

The service guy also stated that the emission system was covered for 60k, but the EGT sensor and knock sensor that went out are not part of the emissions system. I do not understand this at all. How can some EGT sensors be part of the emissions and others are not? That does not make sense to me. I would think the knock sensor was classified as engine, but the service guy does not agree with that either.

I am very upset about this item. He said he is going to talk to someone and get back to me. If I have to pay for this, I have two choices, no more ford trucks including trading this one or delete the emissions and keep this one. I almost got the cummins 6.7 instead and now I am kicking myself for not doing it.

Just keeping you all updated, The service writer called me back again after contacting Ford. He said that Ford is going to take care of some of it and my bill will end up going from about $900 to about $300.

This is definitely good news and does earn some good will back towards Ford and a lot of good will towards my dealer. I am still not sure what to think about the situation though as it makes no sense that some of the EGT sensors are considered Emissions parts and some are not.

This experience does make me realize that the only warranty that is worth having is the bumper to bumper one and even that one is so arbitrary and reliant on the whim's of individuals that none of them are really worth having. Voiding the warranty is what originally stopped me from doing a DPF/SCR delete and tune, but now that I know how worthless the warranty is, I would probably get more peace of mind by deleting the emissions stuff.

I would also like to recommend Leaf Johnson Truck City Ford in Buda to anyone in central Texas. I purchased my truck there and have had it serviced there since new. The service guys at this location have taken very good care of me.

Thanks for sharing your experience with us, wadeg! I'm so glad to hear that your situation was addressed and that your dealership took great care of you. If you need anything in the future, don't hesitate to contact me.

I guess my question would be.....how would anything on this truck that shuts it down completely not be powertrain warranty. I would think that ford would warranty emmissions for at least 5/100k. Sounds like another way for Ford to gouge customers. There are a number of threads starting to show up on all the powerstroke sites of emission/engine related failures now that these trucks are starting to get miles on them. Oh well I guess time will tell.

Why do 95% of the people who post on this forum having these kind of issues have less thatn 5 posts? Do they join just because they are having problems or what?

Is there a problem if somebody joins for help, ideas or to share a problem?

I can see if somebody chimes in only to bash another but this isn't the case here.

Funny isn't it? I keep my awareness high but other than a CEL off and on I've not had any problems... I keep my fingers crossed at 18565 miles...

No of course not, it just seems like people post a few times about how bad they have it, don't reply to any of the helpful suggestions and never post again.

I had a similar issue with my `08 F-450. I had two EGT sensors go bad at 2 different times. First one was covered under emissions warranty. 2nd one was not covered by the emmisions warranty. I questioned it too, but it is what it is. I had to pay for one of them.

Since I am a fulltime RV'er and tow a lot, I purchased an ESP when I got my `12 F-450.

After looking under the hood I purchased the bumper to bumper( or close to it) 100,000 mile warranty from Ford. When we purchased my wife's 2013 Explorer we also got the 100,000 for it. It was actually pretty cheap for it, was told then that Ford was reducing the cost trying to get more people to stay with Ford for the EXPs. Not sure if it is true but just what I was told.

Agreed. I just was amazed to see the exact same issue I have posted on the same day so actually had to re-join and post.

Couldn't remember my old screen name.
